Michigan Tech’s Halonen named Hobey Baker Award finalist

HOUGHTON — Michigan Tech senior forward Brian Halonen was named a top 10 finalist for college hockey’s prize for its top player, the Hobey Baker Memorial Award.

Halonen is the fifth Michigan Tech player named a finalist for the award, and the first since Alex Petan in 2016. Tanner Kero (2015), Jamie Ram (1994) and Colin Murphy (2005) are Tech’s past finalists.

Halonen, of Delano, Minnesota, was already named to the All-CCHA First Team on Tuesday. He leads the conference with 16 goals and 36 points in conference games.

He has 21 goals and 33 assists in 36 games this season. He became the 68th player in program history to reach 100 career points.

Other Hobey Baker Award finalists include Matty Beniers (University of Michigan), Bobby Brink (University of Denver), Luke Hughes (University of Michigan, Devon Levi (Northeastern University), Dryden McKay (Minnesota State University), Ben Meyers (University of Minnesota), Yanev Perets (Quinnipiac University), Nathan Smith (Minnesota State University) and Bobby Trivigno (University of Massachusetts).

The second phrase of balloting ends March 27. Fan votes account for 1% of the total ballot in each phase of selecting the award winner.

The remaining three finalists will be announced Thursday, March 31. The winner will be announced Friday, April 8.
