Gremlins sweep Early Bird track meet

LAKE LINDEN — Houghton swept the Early Bird track and field meet at Warner Athletic Field on Tuesday.

The Gremlins girls won with 175.5 points. West Iron County (89.5), Calumet (77), Lake Linden-Hubbell (60) and Baraga (50) rounded out the top five.

Hancock (39) took sixth, followed by L’Anse (22), Chassell (6) and Jeffers (2).

The Houghton boys won with 189 points. Calumet (100.5) was second, followed by Lake Linden-Hubbell (65.5), L’Anse (53), West Iron County (41), Jeffers (34), Baraga (21), Chassell (16) and Hancock (3).

Ingrid Seagren won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:34.8. She also captured the 1600 run at 5:40.4. Claire Filpus was second in the 1600 at 5:49.9.

Houghton’s Lily Ross won the 3200 run with a time of 13:21.9, follwed by teammate Jaden Serafin (14:15.5), Gabrielle Bishop (14:26.8) and Kiira Niska (14:42.1).

The Gremlins’ 3200 relay team composed of Stella Wickstrom, Paige Sleeman, Lily Ross and Seagren took first with a time of 10:50.0.

Katie Graff took second for the Gremlins in discus at 82 feet, 5.5 inches. Calumet’s Lizzie Torola won the event at 89 feet, 2 inches. Baraga’s Reese Holley (76 feet) was third.

Abi Codere won the 100 hurdles for the host Lakes with a time of 17.6. Calumet’s Laina Kariniemi took second place at 18.6, followed by West Iron County’s Seanna Stine (19.4).

Cade Holombo paced the Gremlins’ boys team with two individual wins in the 200 dash (23.9) and 400 dash (55.3). He was on Houghton’s winning 800 relay team with Seojun Yoon, Ray Shaw and Kaiden Zapolnik, winning the event with a time of 1:42.0.

Eric Weiss also captured two individual wins in the 1600 run (4:38.9) and the 3200 run (9:57.2). Houghton teammate Luke Hill was second in the 1600 (5:00.7).

Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta took third in the 1600 at 5:11.6. He was second in the 3200 at 11:17.6.

Dryden Nelson won the 100 dash with a time of 11.6. Braydon Nelson took second for the Copper Kings at 11.8. Houghton’s Cole Lystila was third (11.9).

Calumet’s Richard Probst won the 110 hurdles at 17.0. Houghton’s Mikko Salmi was third (18.5).

Salmi also took third in the 300 hurdles at 50.5. Probst was second in the event at 45.6.

The Copper Kings won the 400 relay at 47.5. The team was composed of Gabriel Mattila, Probst, Braydon Nelson and Dryden Nelson). Houghton was second, and Lake Linden-Hubbell was third.

Jeffers’ Chance Bridgers won shot put at 46 feet. Baraga’s Christian Brown won discus at 109 feet, 7 inches. L’Anse’s Nathan Hochstein won high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches. Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Travis Ongie was first in pole vault at 11 feet, 6 inches. Dryden Nelson took long jump at 18 feet, 6 inches.
