Halonen, Nelson receive Calumet athletic honors

CALUMET — Calumet High School seniors Marybeth Halonen and Dryden Nelson won the top athletic honors at the school’s awards ceremony Thursday morning.

Halonen was named the recipient of the Holly Jean McCullah Outstanding Female Athlete Award. Nelson was named recipient of the George Gipp All-American Award.

Halonen earned eight varsity letters, including four in basketball, along with two each in volleyball and softball. She earned a truckload of accolades with most in basketball, including WestPAC Player of the Year last season. She finished her career with 1,032 points. She was an All-UP First Team selection in 2021 and 2022, WestPAC All-Conference First Team, WestPAC All-Conference Dream Team.

In volleyball, Halonen was All-Region First Team in 2020 and 2021. She was WestPAC All-Conference First Team in 2021 and WestPAC All-Conference Second Team in 2020.

Halonen also has a 3.862 grade-point average.

Nelson earned 10 varsity letters, including three each in football, basketball and track. His other letter came in baseball.

Nelson’s athletic versatility was on greatest display in football, in which he earned a slew of recognition. He was named to the All-UP Dream Team, and was an Associated Press Divisions 5-6 All-State Second Team running back. He was named a Detroit Free Press Division 6 All-State running back. He was the WestPAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2021. In that same year, he was also named WestPAC All-Conference First Team, and WestPAC Special Teams Player of the Year runner-up.

In 2020, Nelson was Detroit Free Press All-State honorable mention. He was also a WestPAC All-Conference First Team selection. In 2019, he was a WestPAC All-Conference honorable mention.

In basketball, Nelson was WestPAC All-Conference First Team last season. The season prior, he was a second-team selection.

In track, he was All-State in the 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay in 2019 and 2021.

In baseball, he was a WestPAC All-Conference Second Team selection.

Nelson has a 3.199 GPA.
