KINGSFORD — The Ontonagon girls will be keeping their Upper Peninsula Division 3 track and field title for at least another year.
They made that possible by scoring 74 points here Saturday. Stephenson edged Munising 62-60 for runner-up honors.
“When you come to the Finals, everybody can do something special,” said Ontonagon coach Brian Amos. “This is our third title in six years. We have a bunch of good kids who do what’s asked of them. We’re super proud of the girls. That’s a team effort.”
The Gladiators won three relays, taking the 400-meter event in 52.84 seconds, 800 (1:52.68) and 1600 (4:28.41) on this sunny and mild day at Flivver Field.
“We’re pretty excited right now,” said senior Kiirsa Kolpack, who anchored the 400 relay. “Our handoffs and chemistry are real good. Being in sync with each other makes a big difference. We had a breeze kind of drifting on the south end of the field which kind of cooled us off a little.”
Lilly McIntyre provided the Gladiators with an additional first in the 100-meter dash in 13.7 seconds, edging Dollar Bay’s Ashlea Datto by .1 second.
Lake Linden-Hubbell freshman Emily Jokela won the 400 in a school-record 60.45 seconds and added firsts in 200 (27.83) and 300 hurdles (47.78) and a third in the 100 (13.78).
Abi Codere added a first in the 100 hurdles (17.18).
Kolpack was runner-up in the 100 hurdles (17.36). Ontonagon freshman Ali Bobula took second in the 200 (28.17) and Violet Amos was third (28.59).
Negaunee copped the D1 title for the first time four years with 119 1/2 points, followed by two-time defending champion Marquette 98 and Sault Ste. Marie 86.
Houghton copped the 3200 relay (10:19.08) and Claire Filpus added a first in the 1600 run (5:42.55).
Senior Ingrid Seagren, who helped the Gremlins win that relay, was the D1 runner-up in the 3200 (12:37.25).
Ishpeming sophomore Lola Korpi was D2 and overall winner (12:34.95), followed by D1 champion Cassandra Gallagher of Sault Ste. Marie (12:36.83).
Seagren led all the way until the home stretch of the final lap.
“This is a real heartbreaker,” she said. “I’m disappointed in my finish. I had Covid this week. My throat is burning and I’m having a hard time breathing. We ran a decent time in our relay. I’m proud of our team.”
Houghton’s Elli Wagner placed third in the 100 (13.55) and 200 (28.31) and Lily Ross was third in the 800 (2:36.09) and 1600 (5:46.65).
Bark River-Harris earned its first D2 title with 107 points, followed by West Iron County 74 and Ishpeming 71.
West Iron’s Danica Shamion set a U.P. record in the 400 (58.77), shaving .41 second off the previous best by former West Iron runner Emily Kinner in 2017.
Shamion also won the 100 (12.7) and 200 (26.8) and Kyra Sipe provided L’Anse with a runner-up finish in the 400 (1:00.3).
