HARBOR SPRINGS -- Standish-Sterling took an early lead and held on to defeat Houghton 7-3 in a MHSAA Division 3 Region 17 championship Saturday.

The Gremlins gave up a run on an error in the first, a home run in the fourth, before the Panthers added two in the sixth and three in the seventh to take control.

Houghton’s offense was slower out of the gate. The Gremlins didn’t get a hit until the sixth batter, Jonah Horning, singled with one out in the second.

Standish-Sterling batted around in the seventh inning despite just two hits. The Panthers got two runners on with a walk and hit-by-pitch before Cole Prout hit a three-run home run.

Houghton’s Dylan Horning and Jonah Horning each doubled and scored in the sixth for the Gremlins’ first runs.

Gremlins senior Kade Farrell singled in the third, and walked in the seventh. Reed Heathman doubled to score Farrell.

Standish-Sterling defeated Traverse City St. Francis 11-0 in a state quarterfinal later Saturday afternoon, advancing to the state semifinals against Buchanan on June 17.
