STANTON TOWNSHIP -- Garnet Garage broke a tie with Houghton Building Supply-Stanton in the seventh inning on Thursday to get back on the winning track with a 4-3 win.
"We needed this one," said Garnet's player-manager Kevin Bostwick. "It feels good to finally put together a complete game free of errors."
It was Bostwick who scored the winning run and swung a hot bat the whole night going 3 for 4 against his former team off HBS-Stanton starter Eli Luoma.
"I was seeing the ball well tonight," he said.
Bostwick got on base in the seventh with a base knock up the middle. Two batters later he crossed home on a Justin Norkol single.
Garnet (6-2) took an early lead 2-0 in the first frame with base hits by Bostwick and an RBI triple by catcher Mike Saari as well as a single by Reid Heathman. Mike Saari would score again in the third on another Reid Heathman single hit hard through the left side.
Houghton Building Supply (2-6) countered with one run of their own in the bottom of the first, and their big rally took shape in their third frame where they scored two runs to tie the game.
It was then that HBS-Stanton player-manager Daron Durocher started things off with a single. He would score two batters later as would Dax Durocher on Luoma single.
Knotted at 3-3 after three innings the game turned in to a defensive battle and pitching duel for the remained of the game.
Coy Budweg earned the win for Garnet. He threw a complete game walking none and striking out just three.
"Coy pitched great," Bostwick said, "and we were able to clean up our fielding by playing some solid defense."
Garnet Garage's outfield was tested often throughout the game. In the fifth, left fielder Will Romano was responsible for all three put outs with three fly balls hit to him.
In the other dugout, HBS's Daron Durocher said he would have wished his squad had played better defense especially in that opening inning.
"If we would have come out stronger and made the plays in the field in the first inning, we might have had a better outcome," he said. "It was a good game. Garnet is a good team, and they beat us."
