“The line up front got the job done, and the backs took advantage of it,” said Lake Linden-Hubbell head coach Brett Gervais. “We’ve had a really good early camp so far, the two weeks leading up to the season. We still have things to get better at, but overall we’re happy, at least how we did as a first unit.”
Junior Sam Roberts had three carries for 81 yards and one touchdown. Senior James Milkey had three carries for 73 yards and one touchdown. Junior Matthew Jokela had six carries for 46 yards, two touchdowns and a kick return for a touchdown.
Fifty-five seconds into the game, Milkey ran for a 54-yard touchdown, and after a successful two-point conversion, the score was 8-0. Three minutes and six seconds later, Roberts had a 70-yard scamper for a score. The two-point was good, making it a 16-0 game. The LL-H defense forced a fumble deep in the Carney-Nadeau end, and shortly after the turnover, junior Cole Griffin capitalized by punching in a one-yard TD run. The two-point try failed, and it was 22-0 with 4:48 left in the quarter. The first quarter would end with the Lakes knocking on the door again.
Eight seconds into the second, Jokela finished the first-quarter drive with an 18-yard touchdown. After the two-point effort came up short, the Lakes held a commanding 28-0 advantage. The Wolves put together a 12-play 81-yard drive capped off by a 16-yard touchdown pass. The two-point try was good, and it was 28-8 in favor of the home team with 3:25 left in the half. On the ensuing kick-off, Jokela returned the kick 82 yards for a touchdown. The team added the two-point conversion to extend their lead to 36-8, as the teams headed to the half.
Jokela scored the first TD in the second half with a 14-yard run that included a good two-point try. With 6:20 left in the quarter, LL-H led 44-8. That would be the only score in the third, and the Lakes confidently went into the break before the four quarter.
“It was good to get a few reps in, you know, for the guys on varsity and then our JV,” said Gervais. “So overall, it was a really good for the football program today because everyone got to play.”
With some of the younger players in the game for the Lakes, the Wolves scored two more touchdowns and two more two-point conversions before the end of the game, but it caused no stress to the home team.
