Calumet rolls in win vs. Marquette

CALUMET — The Marquette Redmen traveled to Calumet, and like the previous opponents, they could not handle the overpowering Copper King squad.

After a 3-0 rout of the Redmen, the Kings are three games into the regular season and have yet to lose a single set.

“They work really hard, put in a lot of time, and compete,” Calumet head coach Kate Bonacorsi said on the team’s success.

The Kings won each set by double digits; 25-14, 25-10, and 25-8.

“I thought we took control offensively, we served really [well], and we were really efficient hitting the ball tonight, too,” Bonacorsi said. “We kept them out of system, and that makes it hard to score points.”

Senior Helen Beiring had an impressive 16 kills, and sophomore Madelyn Torola added seven. Senior Kaylie Halonen served an ace five times and had 11 digs, and sophomore Allison Bjorn chipped in with 12 digs.

Neither team could grab the momentum in the first part of the opening set. After a lot of point-for-point rallies, Calumet had a 10-8 lead. The Kings found some traction, taking nine out of the following ten points to distance themselves from the Redmen. The score was 19-9 when Marquette scored five straight. However, Calumet followed that run with a stretch of six, ending the first set, 25-14.

Calumet leapt out to a 5-1 advantage in the second set. The Redmen answered with two, but the Kings continued their strong play and rattled off seven in a row to take a 12-3 lead. Over the next 12 rallies, Marquette scored seven points, and the Kings scored five. In control, up 17-10, Calumet put the set to bed with eight consecutive points and took a commanding 2-0 lead.

After the dominating 25-10 win in the second, the Kings continued their terrific play in the third, jumping in front 7-1. Marquette struggled against the mighty Copper Kings in the final set and failed to put together any runs. The Kings did not let up until they walked away with the 25-8 third-frame win and a three sets to zero victory.

On Sept. 24, Calumet travels to Duluth, Minn. to play in a tournament on Saturday, Sept. 24. The next home game is against Ishpeming on Sept. 27.
