Michigan Tech looks to end a three-game losing streak when it visits Davenport on Saturday.
The Huskies (1-3) will take on the Panthers at noon Saturday at Farmers Athletic Insurance Complex in Grand Rapids.
Michigan Tech is coming off a flat offensive showing in a 35-13 loss against No. 17 Saginaw Valley State.
The Huskies averaged 3.5 yards per play on offense last week, a stark contrast to the Cardinals’ 6.5 yards per play.
The Huskies’ offensive woes account for much of why they’re facing a three-game losing streak.
Tech’s defense has anchored the season and balanced an unproductive offense so far this season. The Huskies defense ranks third in giving up 181 passing yards per game, and sixth in giving up 169.5 rushing yards per game.
Huskies sophomore linebacker Marc Sippel leads the GLIAC averaging 12.3 tackles per game.
Michigan Tech ranks 162 out of 163 NCAA Division II football teams by converting just 18% of third-down situations (10 of 55).
The Huskies’ failure to convert on third downs means offensive drives coming to a premature end, hampering scoring production. The Huskies rank 135th at 15.8 points per game, and their 219.5 yards per game is comfortably last in the GLIAC and the only team in the conference yet to gain 1,000 yards of offense this season.
Davenport’s offense is fourth in the GLIAC at 34 points per game.
Panthers quarterback Jason Whittaker is second in the GLIAC averaging 159.3 passing yards per game. He has seven touchdowns and no interceptions. He also has the highest efficiency (192.7) among GLIAC quarterbacks with at least 45 passing attempts.
Panthers wide receivers Sy Barnett and Preston Smith are second and third in the conference, respectively, with 81 and 67 receiving yards.
