Warriors place second in UP Championships

MARQUETTE — Multiple local soccer teams took part in the U.P. Soccer Championships in Marquette on Saturday, Oct. 16. The Houghton Soccer Club took fourth place in Division I, as did the Houghton JV Soccer Club in Division II.

The Copper Country Christian School Warriors also competed, earning a trip to the Division II title game by defeating Negaunee Soccer Club, 2-1, in the semifinals. In the championship game, the Warriors fell, 3-0, to Bayside.

In the semifinal, the Warriors fell behind 1-0 in the second half before Isaac Noble evened things. The game remained even late in the contest until Nick Jackson struck on a 35-yard free kick.

Bayside reached the title match by defeating Houghton JV, 5-0.

With the strong weekend showing, the Warriors finished their season 3-7-2 on the season.

The Warriors are a cooperative effort between the school and area homeschoolers. The co-ed team is composed of players from sixth grade – 19 years old. The team is coached by Chris Perez and Jesse Jacobusse, a former Michigan Tech soccer player.

The Warriors won the title in 2020, and finished third in 2021.
