Roundup: Vikings win, Panthers and Gladiators drop openers

BARAGA — Playing at home on Thursday, the Baraga Vikings girls basketball team earning a season-opening victory over the visiting Ontonagon Gladiators in a game Gladiators coach Tim Routheauxreferred to as more of a playoff game than a season-opener.

“The refs let the kids play like the playoffs,” he said. “It was a good season opener. (It) did not feel like a season-opener, more like a playoff game.”

Routheaux felt his girls made some mistakes that they should be able to fix as the season goes along.

Maddie Pollard led the way for the Gladiators with 13 points. She hit three 3-pointers on the night.

For the Vikings, Kylie Michaelson was tough to stop in the first half, where she racked up 12 of her game-high 20 points. Corina Jahfetson added 10 points in the contest, including two 3-pointers in the third quarter.
