Copper Kings girls cruise past Jets

CALUMET — It was a tale of two halves in Calumet Tuesday. A solid second half lifted the Calumet Copper Kings girls basketball team past the visiting Jeffers Jets. The Copper Kings outscored the Jets 29-10 in the final two frames en route to their 46-22 victory.

“We played well on defense in the first half, but we weren’t very sharp offensively and didn’t have a lot of energy,” said Calumet coach Charlie Kemppainen. “In the second half, they came out with a little more focus, and we started to knock down shots and got some offensive rebounds.”

Madelyn Torola led the Copper Kings with 10 points, Isabel Loukus added nine, and Laina Kariniemi chipped in with eight.

Jeffers coach Chad Larson was happy with the first half.

“We played good defensively, and we hit a few shots,” he said. “I was happy with that first half.”

However, Larson credited the Copper Kings for the Jets’ second-half troubles.

“They adjusted and started hitting their shots in that second half,” said Larson. “The crowd started getting into it, so once that started, they started rolling. It started to snowball, and we had a tough time getting any stoppage or momentum going.”

Raena Kangas led the Jets with 14 points.

The first basket came 2:20 into the game off a Calumet shot. Jeffers scored six straight to take a 6-2 lead halfway through the opening quarter. The score remained the same over the next two minutes. The Copper Kings added four to send the game into the second at a tie.

The Jets made a free throw, and then the Copper Kings scored four in a row. Jeffers made another basket before the midpoint of the second quarter, making it a 10-9 game in favor of the home team. The Jets made a three, and the Copper Kings made a bucket. Calumet rattled off five in a row to take a 17-12 lead into halftime.

The Copper Kings came out of the break on fire. Just two minutes in, Calumet pushed their lead to 12, 24-12. Over the next four minutes, the Copper Kings went on a 5-2 run, giving them a 29-14 advantage.

Calumet held Jeffers off the board over the final two minutes of the third quarter while adding six to their total. The score going into the fourth was 35-14 in favor of the Copper Kings.

The fourth quarter was more-or-less a formality. The outcome was never in doubt, but the Jets still played hard. Calumet only scored one more point than Jeffers, 10-9.
