LAKE LINDEN — At 3-0, Superior Service is quickly proving to be a team to beat on the Copper Country Women’s Fastpitch Softball circuit this summer. They stayed perfect on Wednesday with a 9-0 shutout of Superior National Bank at the Boneyard, and they made it look easy at the plate.
The bottom of the first started off with four base hits. Milly Loukus led off with a double off starter Larissa Anderson. Tarynn Brey followed suit with a two-bagger of her own. Then came back-to-back singles from player-coach Raili Therrian and Josie Conners before the first out. All four women scored, and before the third out, there would be three more hits including another double by Loukus.
Superior Service led 6-0 after one.
“All those runs in the first inning really helped,” said Therrian. “We started off really strong, then slowed down, but were on the ball the entire time. Our fielding was great – without errors. It has been a big improvement from last year.”
Strong pitching by Conners also helped Superior Service. She earned a complete-game win while striking out five and walking just one.
The second, fourth and fifth innings were quick ones for Superior Service in the field as they were classic three-up and three-down frames. In short, the defense did their job.
Meanwhile, SNB struggled to make plays.
“We dug a hole in that first inning and couldn’t get out of it,” said player-coach Rosalie Anderson-Kangas. “That set the tone. It is hard to spot a team six runs and expect to come back.”
Superior Service scored three more in the sixth to make it 9-0. While a double in the top seventh off the bat of SNB’s Dana Berg sparked some hope in SNB of not being shut out, that positive vibe was short-lived as three grounders subsequently ended the game.
REL Inc. 12, Gold Standard 8
The ladies from REL Inc. earned their first win of the season (1-2) with a come-from-behind win over Gold Standard (1-2) at the Boneyard on Wednesday.
Delaney Anderson threw a gem for REL and earned her first victory from the circle.
Swinging a big bat for REL was D’Andrea Kero, who had two doubles. Teammate Hannah Asiala had a double and a single.
For Gold Standard, Jordan Rowe and Ryleigh Johnson each had two singles.
“It came down to errors,” said Gold Standard’s coach Curtis Kinnunen. “We were up, but then had too many errors. As well it seemed that after that, everything we hit went straight to them.”
