Frisbee hall donates files to Michigan Tech Archives
HOUGHTON — The International Frisbee/USA Guts Hall of Fame has donated a large cache of documents to the Michigan Technological University Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections. The files cover the years from mid-twentieth century to the present day and include many items of interest for Frisbee historians and fans.
“This extensive collection comprises many Frisbee publications, newspaper clippings, correspondence and programs,” said University Archivist Lindsay Hiltunen. “They will be great sources for research and also of general interest to the public.”
Included in the donation are the entire catalog of Guts Players Association Newsletters (1977-95), many editions of Frisbee World Magazine (1975-1981) and articles from Time magazine, Sports Illustrated, the New York Times, Toronto Star and numerous other newspapers and magazines.
“There’s even a long list of team names and player names from Guts Frisbee tournaments from the beginnings into the 2000s,” Hiltunen added.
Archivist Allison Neely processed the collection, and it is available for research and the public to view under the title, “Records of the International Frisbee and USA Guts Hall of Fame, 1969-2022.” The material makes its debut in time for the 65th Coca-Cola International Frisbee Tournament, Saturday and Sunday, July 8 and 9, at the Driving Park in Hancock.
The Archives are located on the ground floor of the Van Pelt and Opie Library on the Michigan Tech campus. Hours are Monday-Thursday, 1-5 p.m. by appointment. Appointments can be booked by calling 906-487-2505 or emailing copper@mtu.edu. Advance notice is required for all appointments.
The International Frisbee/USA Guts Hall of Fame is located on the second floor of the Calumet Colosseum and is open to the public whenever the Colosseum is open. Established in 1978 by Wham-O and the Copper Country Chamber of Commerce, the Hall of Fame celebrates all disc sports, focusing on Guts Frisbee.
