Bulldogs boys squeeze past Copper Kings

CALUMET — With a game-high 13 points from Alex Pietila, the Hancock Bulldogs boys basketball team earned a two-point victory over the Calumet Copper Kings, 37-35, Friday at the Calumet Gym.

Pietila scored just two points in each of the first and second quarters, but came up with big baskets and key free throws in the second half to drive the Bulldogs’ offense.

Calumet led after eight minutes 12-10 thanks to four points each from Blake Tarvis and Trent Halonen. They continued to play well through the first half, leading 23-20 by the break.

In the third quarter, the Copper Kings continued to take advantage of their shots, including a 3-pointer from Gavin Sturos and they led 31-27 heading into the final eight minutes.

In the fourth quarter, Lane Pennala and Shaun Kilpela each hit 3-pointers as the Bulldogs came up with 10 points, while holding the Copper Kings to just four.

Kilpela finished with nine points for the Bulldogs.

Calumet was paced by Micah Pieti with nine points.
