Huskies sweep CCHA weekly awards

HOUGHTON — Three Michigan Tech hockey players earned the CCHA Player of the Week awards the league announced on Tuesday (Jan. 2). Jack Works was named the CCHA Offensive Player of the Week, Blake Pietila is the CCHA Goaltender of the Week, and Chase Pietila is the CCHA Defenseman and Rookie of the Week.

Works was named the MVP of the 57th Great Lakes Invitational after netting a hat trick in the championship game against No. 7 Michigan State. He scored a power-play goal in the first period and a pair of goals in the third period to lead the Huskies to their 12th GLI Title. The junior from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories has 10 points with eight goals and two assists in his second season with the Huskies.

Blake Pietila was named to the GLI All-Tournament Team after backstopping the Huskies to their 12th title. The fifth-year goaltender made a career-high 54 saves in the GLI Championship Game and then stopped all three tries in the shootout by the Spartans. The Howell, Michigan native also made 23 saves the day before in the 3-2 semifinal win over Alaska. Pietila ranks ninth in the nation with 503 saves this season and holds a 2.67 goals-against average and .913 save percentage. It is his 16th career conference goaltender of the week honor and the second this season.

Chase Pietila was named to the GLI All-Tournament Team after registering three assists in the tournament. The native of Howell, Michigan assisted on Ryland Mosley’s game-tying goal against Alaska in the semifinal and then the overtime game-winner by older brother Logan. The freshman assisted on the game-tying goal by Works in the Championship Game against No. 7 MSU. He also helped the penalty-killing unit go 4-for-5, having killed off 19 of its last 20 penalties. Chase leads the team with 13 assists which ranks third in the nation amongst rookie defensemen. It’s the second time he’s been honored with a weekly award this season.

Tech is 9-8-4 overall and gets back to action with an exhibition game at Northern Michigan on Saturday.
