Blake Pietila named CCHA Goaltender of Month

HOUGHTON — Michigan Tech Huskies senior goaltender Blake Pietila is the CCHA Goaltender of the Month for February the league announced on Wednesday. It’s the second time this season and the eighth time in his career that he has been named the conference goaltender of the month.

Blake Pietila went 3-2-1 during February with a 1.99 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. He earned one shutout and stopped over 25 shots four times with three 31-save games. He stopped 31 shots in a 7-0 shout win at Bowling Green (Feb. 23), made 31 saves in a 3-1 win over Minnesota State (Feb. 9) on Winter Carnival, and also had 31 saves in a 3-3 tie with Northern Michigan (Feb. 3).

Pietila was named the CCHA Student-Athlete of the Year earlier this month and also was named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week this week — an award he has received 17 times in his career.

Pietila leads the CCHA in saves per game (26.7) and ranks second in goals-against average (2.40) and third in save percentage (.918). Tech’s all-time wins leader (71) is the NCAA’s active leader in wins and shutouts (22) and is also third in saves (3,193) and eighth in save percentage (.922).

Tech hosts St. Thomas in the regular season finale on Friday at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday at 6:07 p.m. The Huskies can climb to as high as the No. 2 seed for the CCHA Playoffs. The eight seniors will be honored after Saturday’s game.
