Copper Kings softball splits with Gogebic Miners

BESSEMER — With six runs in the third inning of the opening game of a doubleheader, the Calumet Copper Kings softball team earned an 11-4 victory over the Gogebic Miners on Thursday. In the nightcap, the Miners scored six runs combined over the first four innings to take the game, 6-1.

In the opener, the Copper Kings trailed 3-0 going into the third inning when Kaylee Newsom reached first base on a defensive error to lead off. Two batters later, Ryleigh Johnson doubled to center, putting two runners in scoring position. Chloe Coppo then singled to center to bring in Newsom and get Calumet on the board.

Lena Myhren then doubled to left, which brought Johnson home. Isabella Coppo walked to load the bases. Kaydence Christoferson drew a walk, which scored Chloe Coppo and tied the game.

Molly Erkkila hit a sacrifice grounder, bringing Myhren home. Audrey Erkkila followed with a single to right field, scoring Isabella Coppo.

With Newsom back at the plate, Christoferson scored on a passed ball, putting Calumet up 6-3.

The Copper Kings added five more runs over the final three innings to earn the win.

Myhren went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Isabella Coppo went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Molly Erkkila went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.

Audrey Erkkila got the win in the pitcher’s circle. She struck out four, walked two and gave up nine hits over seven innings.

In the nightcap, Johnson, Myhren, Chloe Coppo and Claire Ruonavaara all collected hits.

Newsom took the loss in the pitcher’s circle, striking out seven, walking five and giving up four hits over six innings.
