Gremlins boys track earns win in Negaunee Thursday

NEGAUNEE — With 107.5 points earned Thursday, the Houghton Gremlins boys track and field team won in Negaunee, topping the host Miners, who had 93.5 points.

Houghton got things going quickly with a win in the 3200 meter relay. The team of Luke Hill, Birk Seagren, Colin Van Karsen and Ben Hemmer finished nearly 36 seconds faster than Negaunee’s team.

Brody Mattila followed that up with a win in the 110 meter hurdles, thanks to a time of 15.53 seconds. He also won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 42.62. He followed that effort up with a win in the long jump with a jump of 19-feet, 11.5 inches.

After helping the relay team to the win, Hill followed that up with a win in the 1600 meter run, finishing with a time of 4:43.78. He beat teammates Seagren and Van Karsen, who finished second and third, respectively. Hill also won the 3200 meter run, topping Seagren with a time of 10:14.16.

Van Karsen won the 800 meter run with a time of 2;18.50.

Michael Salera was the other Gremlins’ competitor to win an event, taking the discus with a throw of 105-feet, 5.5 inches.

Calumet’s Matt Frantti won the shot put, with a throw of 40-feet, 1.5 inches.

In L’Anse, the Hancock Bulldogs did well at the Early Bird Invite Thursday.

Myles Lewis won the shot put for the boys.

On the girls’ side, Addison Pizzi won the 100 meter hurdles.

Brielle Kero won the 400 meter run. She also helped the 1600 meter relay team win, alongside Jayna Keranen, Ella Keranen, and Rayna Towles.
