Lakes dominates Bulldog Invite: Boys and girls teams win with ease

HANCOCK — The Hancock High School track was the place to be on Tuesday for area regional teams. While 10 boys and girls’ teams competed in the Bulldog Invitational, it was the Lakes from Lake Linden-Hubbell that set the tone. The boys earned first place with a score of 153 while the girls took first place with a 137.5.

“The team has been working hard this year,” said coach Brett Gervais. “In particular, we have a good group of seniors and another group that is stepping in to fill in the gaps from last year.”

Among those seniors is Matthew Jokela. He won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes on Tuesday.

“He is a sprinter who works his tail off,” noted his coach.

Placing second overall for the boys was Dollar Bay with 87. Third place went to Calumet with 51.

On the girls’ side behind Lake Linden-Hubbell was Calumet at 89.5. Hancock came in third at 86.

The meet saw a number of new faces who placed well. Among them was Conner Kemppainen of L’Anse. The freshman took first place in the 300-meter hurdles and second in the 110-meter hurdles.

“He works hard,” said his coach, Jacob Ogea. “He is just a freshman and going up against seniors and winning.”

Ogea added that he was pleased with his adaptive athlete Trinity Pelton. While she was the meet’s one -and- only wheelchair racer, she works hard according to her coach.

Chassell junior Kalvin Kytta is no stranger to running distance. He was a dominate runner this past fall for the

Panthers cross country team. Fast forward six months and he was back at it – this time just around the oval track. Kytta took first place in the 1600 and 3200-meter runs, much to the pleasure of his coach and older brother Kolson Kytta.

“What can I say, he is a distance guy for us and does a great job,” noted Kolson.

While the sky threatened rain for most of the event and some sprinkles did come down, it did not dampen spirits.

“The meet went well and ran smoothly,” said Hancock High School athletic director Ryan Towles. “I was happy with how it went.”
