Six to be inducted into the Calumet High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2024

Later this month, the Calumet High School Athletic Hall of Fame will induct six new members who were leaders on the football field, on the ice, in the gym, and on the track. All six had incredible impacts on the Copper Kings during their high school careers.
EMMETT BJORN
Emmett Bjorn earned seven letters in football (two), hockey (two), and track (three) while attending Calumet High School from 2004-2008. In track, he earned All-State honors in the discus at the U.P. Finals by finishing second (2007), and fourth (2008).
In hockey, Emmett was a member of the 2008 MHSAA State Championship Team. He was named to the All-Conference First Team as a senior (2008).
In football, he was named WestPAC Conference First Team, All-UP Dream Team, and Detroit Free Press All-State at quarterback (2006). Emmett was named to the WestPAC All- Conference First team, and All-UP Special Mention as a linebacker (2007). He set school records for most career passing yards – 2,136, and most touchdown passes thrown in a season – 13 (2006). Both records stand at the time of induction.
He was awarded the George Gipp All-American Award as the most outstanding senior male athlete (2008). Emmett was selected to play in the first U.P. All-Star Football game and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player (2008). He went on to play five years of college football at Michigan Tech, earning three letters (2008-12). Emmett was named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team (2009) and was named Michigan Tech Defensive Back of the Year and GLIAC All-Conference defensive back (2012).
JOHN CROZE
John Croze earned eight letters in track (four), football (two), and basketball (two) while attending Ishpeming High School from 1982-86. As a senior, he was an All-UP and All-State selection at tight end, and earned All-State honors by finishing second in the discus at the UP Finals in 1986. He was awarded Ishpeming High School’s Tracy Strom Memorial Award as a senior. At the time of induction, he holds Ishpeming’s record in the discus.
Following high school, he enrolled at the United States Military Academy at West Point where he played rugby, and later at Michigan Tech where he played football.
John’s coaching career began as assistant track coach from 1992-96, and 2014-15, and as the varsity head track coach from 1996-09, and 2015-17. He was named WestPAC Coach of the Year nine times. His boy’s track teams won the WestPAC 12 times, finished as U.P. Division 1 Runners-Up in 2001 and 2002, and were the Class C U.P. Champions in 1997, 1998, and 1999.
In basketball, Coach Croze was the freshman boy’s coach in 1994-95, JV boy’s coach in 1995-96, and 2000-2006. He was also an assistant coach on Calumet’s MHSAA Class C Girls State Championship team in 2014-15.
He coached football as an assistant varsity coach from 1991-2000 winning WestPAC Championships in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999. John served as varsity head football coach for 21 seasons from 2001-2021 where he compiled a record of 145 wins and 72 losses (.668). He was named WestPAC Coach of the Year nine times, Regional Coach of the Year seven times, and U.P. Coach of the Year in 2009. Coach Croze won WestPAC Championship eight times, and MHSAA District Championship four times. His teams were named U.P. Class C Team of the Year in 2009 and 2018 and qualified for the playoffs 22 times. He had three ten-win seasons, and two undefeated regular seasons. John led Academic All-State Teams nine times and earned the top spot in Div. 6 in 2012. He served as an assistant coach in the U.P. All-Star Game 2009 and 2010, and as the head coach in 2011. He was also selected as an assistant coach in the MHSFCA East-West All Star Game in 2021.
John was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2022. His overall coaching record at Calumet was 209-100 (.676).
PETE MOYRYLA
Pete Moyryla earned six letters in football (two), basketball (two), and track (two) while attending Calumet High School from 1999-2003.
In track, he earned All-State honors three times by finishing 4th in the discus – 131-feet-11-inches (2002), fourth in the shot put – 43-feet-11.25-inches (2003), and first in the discus – 131-feet-7-inches (2003) helping his team to finish as U.P. Finals Runners-Up in Division 1 (2001 and 2002).
In football, Pete recorded 69 tackles, including eight for a loss, and three sacks as a junior (2001), and 84 tackles including 11 for a loss, and three sacks as a senior (2002). He was named WestPAC All-Conference First Team offensive line as a junior and senior (2001 and 2002). Pete was named All-UP Special Mention defensive line as a junior (2001) and All-UP First Team tackle as a senior (2002).
He played college football at Michigan Tech, earning four letters (2003-07). Pete was named to the GLIAC All- Conference First Team offensive line as a junior (2006) and as a senior (2007). He led the team with 77 knock-down blocks as an offensive tackle (2007) and was named MTU Offensive Lineman of the Year (2007). Pete anchored an offensive line that helped Michigan Tech average 414.5 total yards and 200.5 rushing yards per game and finished third in the country in fewest sacks allowed (2007).
BOB RANGUS
Bob Rangus earned seven letters in hockey (three), football (two), and golf (two) while attending Calumet High School from 1994-98.
In football, he won WestPAC Championships as a junior (1996) and senior (1997). Bob was named WestPAC All-Conference Quarterback as a senior (1997).
In hockey, he was named to the Lake Superior Conference All-Conference Elite Team as a junior (1997), and as a senior (1998). He was named Lake Superior Conference Player of the Year, and Class B-C-D All-State in 1998. Bob was named Mr. Hockey for the State of Michigan becoming the first Upper Peninsula player to win the award and was selected to participate in the Michigan All-Star Game and with Team Michigan at the Chicago Showcase (1998).
He played two seasons in the North American Hockey League with the Soo Indians. In 100 games played, he scored 19 goals, 22 assists, and had 38 penalty minutes (1998-00). Bob played two seasons at Michigan Tech, appearing in 25 games (2000-02). He then played one season at Finlandia University scoring 22 goals, 13 assists in 22 games, while being named the team MVP (2002-03).
Bob’s professional hockey career started as he split the 2003-04 season with the Knoxville Ice Bears of the South East Hockey League and the Cincinnati Cyclones of the East Coast Hockey League. He played 30 games in Knoxville, scoring 11 goals and 10 assists and played 28 games in Cincinnati, scoring four goals and six assists. The following year, he played nine games with the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Southern Professional Hockey League in 2004-05. Bob concluded his pro career by playing 99 games in the SPHL with the Knoxville Ice Bears (2005-07), scoring 50 goals and 29 assists, helping Knoxville to a SPHL Championship in 2005-06.
KARA RASTELLO LINDEMAN
Kara Rastello Lindeman earned eight letters in volleyball (two), basketball (two), and track (four) while attending Calumet High School from 2004-08. In volleyball, she was named to the WestPAC First Team as a junior (2007) and was named WestPAC Player of the Year as a senior (2008). Kara set the school record for hitting percentage .430 (2007). This record stands at the time of induction.
In track and field, she placed in multiple regional meets in the 400M relay, 800M relay, 1600M relay, and high jump and was named All-State eight times based on performances at the U.P. Finals. During the 2006 season, Kara was a member the 2006 MHSAA U.P. Division 1 Championship Team, helping her team by placing in all four events at the MHSAA U.P. Finals. Kara set the school record in the 400M relay – 1:00.36 (2006), 800M relay – 1:49.10 (2006), 1600M relay – 4:06.89 (2006). These records stand at the time of induction.
Kara received the CHS Senior Female Athlete Award, now the Holly Jean McCullah Award, as the outstanding senior female athlete (2008).
She played college volleyball at Finlandia University (2008-10), where she set match records for kills – 35, hitting percentage – .812, block assists – 8, and total blocks – 14. She set season records for kills – 50, total attempts – 1,257, hitting percentage – .293, kills per set – 4.51, solo blocks – 56, block assists – 79, and blocks per set – 1.16. Kara set career records for kills – 1148, total attempts – 2952, hitting percentage – .261, solo blocks – 139, block assists – 202, and total blocks – 341. She earned All-Association of Division 3 Independents (AD3I) Honorable Mention in 2008, Second Team in 2009, and First Team in 2010. Kara is the only volleyball player in program history to be ranked among the Top 25 in NCAA for the following stats during the 2010 season: points per set – 5.63 (ranked fifth), kills per set – 4.51 (ranked ninth), and blocks per set – 1.16 (ranked 23rd).
BEN STORM
Ben Storm earned 10 letters in football (three), hockey (three), golf (three) and track (one) while attending Calumet High School from 2008-12.
In track, he earned All-State honors by placing fifth in the high jump – 5-feet-8-inches (2012).
In football, Ben was named to the WestPAC First team as an offensive end (2010). He was named WestPAC First Team punter, WestPAC First Team defensive lineman, WestPAC Defensive Player of the Year, All-UP Division 1-7 Defensive Player of the Year, All-UP Dream Team defensive end and punter, and All-State First Team punter (2011).
In hockey, Ben earned All-Conference First Team and All-State First Team honors both as a junior (2011) and as a senior (2012). He helped lead his team to a Final Four appearance (2010) and MHSAA State Runner-Up (2011).
Ben was awarded the George Gipp All-American Award as the most outstanding senior male athlete (2012).
Ben was offered a football scholarship at Michigan Tech but decided to pursue hockey. He played one year in the United States Hockey League with the Muskegon Lumberjacks scoring 2 goals, 10 assists, and 84 penalty minutes in 55 games (2012-13). Ben was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League in the sixth round, 153rd overall in 2013. Ben went on to play four years at St. Cloud State in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), scoring four goals, 13 assists, and 72 penalty minutes in 121 games, while serving as team captain his senior season (2013-17). He also excelled in the classroom, earning NCHC Academic All-Conference honors for three years (2014, 2016, 2017).
After his senior season at St. Cloud, he played the remainder of the 2016-17 season with the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League, appearing in seven games. Ben played the 2017-18 season in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) with the Colorado Eagles, scoring eight goals, 19 assists, 39 penalty minutes in 75 games. Colorado won the ECHL Kelly Cup as playoff champion. He concluded his pro career in the ECHL with the Toledo Walleye in 2018-19, scoring seven goals, 15 assists, 111 penalty minutes in 78 games played.
CEREMONY
The induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. in the CLK School Commons. The event is open to the public and is free to attend.
