ROUNDUP: Copper Kings, Gremlins, Jets find wins against downstate opponents

COPPER KINGS DEFEAT MUSTANGS
CALUMET — The Calumet Copper Kings hockey team used a four-goal outburst in the second period Friday to earn a 5-2 win over the Northville Mustangs at the Calumet Colosseum.
With the win, the Copper Kings improved to 7-10 on the season.
Erik Loukus drove the Copper Kings’ offense with a pair of goals in the contest. Liam Pomroy picked up a goal and two assists.
Luke Hamlin had a goal and an assist, as did Nathan Londo.
Brendan Boberg had two assists.
Beau Jukuri made 16 saves to earn the win.
UP NEXT
Calumet is off until Tuesday when they travel to face Negaunee.
GREMLINS SWEEP WEEKEND
HOUGHTON — The Houghton Gremlins hockey team earned a pair of wins this weekend, first over the Grandville Bulldogs on Friday, 6-3, and then over the Mustangs Saturday, 2-0.
With the two wins, the Gremlins improved to 14-5 on season.
Against the Bulldogs, the Gremlins struck four times in the second period to put the game out of reach.
Jace DeForge drove Houghton’s offense with a pair of goals. Jack Sayen also struck twice.
Hudson Markham and Teegan Tapani scored the other two Gremlins’ goals.
Brycen Nettell stopped 25 shots to earn the win.
Against the Mustangs, the Gremlins scored in the first period and then added an insurance tally in the third to earn the win.
Noah Maillette and Jay Halonen scored the two goals for the Gremlins.
DeForge picked up a pair of assists.
Nettell stopped all 15 shots he faced.

The Gremlins are back in action Wednesday when they head to the MacInnes Student Ice Arena to face the Jeffers Jets.
BULLDOGS DROP PAIR IN THE SOO
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Hancock Bulldogs hockey team traveled to face a pair of opponents in Sault Ste. Marie over the weekend. On Friday, the Bulldogs lost to the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils, 6-2. Saturday, they fell, 3-1 to the Byron Center Bulldogs.
With the losses, the Bulldogs fell to 6-11 on the season.
Against the Blue Devils, the Bulldogs got goals from Damien Colombe and Tevin Stukel.
Jackson Sintkowski picked up a pair of assists in the contest.
Adam Mikkola stopped 14 in the loss.

The Bulldogs are back in action Thursday when they host the Copper Kings.
JETS EARN SPLIT
HOUGHTON — The Jeffers Jets hockey team earned a 3-2 win over the Escanaba Eskymos on Friday, but fell, 6-4, to the Grandville Bulldogs on Saturday at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
With the split, the Jets are now 14-2 on the season.
Against the Eskymos, the Jets got a pair of goals from Brit Heinonen. Griffin Heinonen scored the other Jeffers goal.
Owen Labonte and Ben Sands scored the goals for the Eskymos.
Kasen Helminen stopped 29 of 31 shots he faced to earn the win.
Saturday, the Bulldogs scored two goals in each period to earn the win.
Heinonen scored two goals and picked up two assists as he was involved in all of the Jets’ goals.
Brogan Turner scored the other two Jets tallies.
Helminen made 24 saves in the loss.
