ROUNDUP: Jets, Bulldogs earn wins, Copper Kings, Gremlins get swept

HOUGHTON — Three different players had two goals each Friday as the Jeffers Jets hockey team cruised to an 8-0 win over Manistique Emeralds at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Brogan Turner scored two goals and added two assists to pace the Jets’ attack. Brit Heinonen scored two goals and added an assist.

Benton Rajala scored two as well.

Hudson Heinonen and Easton Therrian scored the other two Jets’ goals.

Kasen Helminen made five saves to earn the shutout win.

BULLDOGS 4, RAMS 1

TRENTON — After dropping a 4-1 decision on Thursday to Lakes Area United, the Hancock Bulldogs hockey team earned the only win by a Copper Country area team in the MIHL Showcase on Friday with a 4-1 win over the Rockford Rams.

Tevin Stukel scored twice to lead the Bulldogs’ attack. Tyler Axford had a goal and an assist. Brady Axford scored the other goal.

Adam Mikkola made 11 saves in the win.

Hancock followed that win up with a 4-1 loss to Bay City on Saturday morning.

EAGLETS 4, GREMLINS 3

TRENTON — The Houghton Gremlins hockey team held a 1-0 lead on Friday afternoon against the Orchard Lake-St. Mary’s Eaglets, but the Eaglets struck twice in the third period to earn a 4-3 win Friday at the MIHL Showcase.

Brody Donnelly, Noah Maillette, and Connor Arko all scored for the Gremlins.

Brycyn Nettell stopped 25 shots in the loss.

CHARGERS 4, GREMLINS 3

TRENTON — Despite scoring twice in the third period, the Gremlins could not find a third goal in a 4-3 loss to the Flint Powers Catholic Chargers Saturday at the MIHL Showcase.

Donnelly struck twice for the Gremlins. Braden Kari scored the other Houghton goal.

Jack Sayen picked up two assists.

Nettell stopped 26 shots in the loss.

WILDCATS 5, COPPER KINGS 4

TRENTON — The Calumet Copper Kings hockey team scored twice in the third period, but it was not enough to overcome a three-goal middle frame by the Alpena Wildcats in a 5-4 loss Friday at the MIHL Showcase.

Brendan Boberg led the Copper Kings offense with a goal and two assists. Ted Loukus added a goal and an assist.

Kobe Solomonson and Liam Pomroy also scored for Calumet.

Beau Jukuri stopped 22 shots in the loss.

WILDCATS 6, COPPER KINGS 4

TRENTON — The Copper Kings scored twice in the second and twice more in the third period, but they could not overcome four goals in the final frame by the Plymouth Wildcats in a 6-4 loss Saturday morning at the MIHL Showcase.

Erik Loukus led the Copper Kings with a goal and two assists. Pomroy, Brady Boberg and Nathan Londo also scored.

Jukuri stopped 18 shots in the loss.
