Bulldogs softball tops Knights on the road
NORWAY — With a big inning in the first game, and four runs spread over seven innings in the nightcap, the Hancock Bulldogs softball team earned a sweep on the road over the Norway Knights, 5-1 and 4-0, Thursday afternoon.
With the wins, the Bulldogs improved to 7-3 on the season.
In the opener, Sadie Biekkola threw seven innings, giving up just three hits. She struck out 10 and walked one.
The game went scoreless into the fourth inning before the Knights got on the board in the bottom half of the inning.
In the top of the fifth, Vera Brooks singled to lead off. Lucy Biekkola attempted to advance her to second with a bunt, but Brooks was tagged at second, however Biekkola got on base. Mallory Sporalski walked. Alice Larson then laid down a bunt and reached on a defensive error. Lucy Biekkola scored on the play to even things.
Romey Koskela followed with a bunt of her own, which scored Sporalski and helped Larson get to third. Sophie Freeman also bunted and got to first base, allowing both Larson and Koskela to score.
The game remained 4-1 in favor of the Bulldogs going into the top of the seventh. Larson led off with a walk. Two batters later, Freeman laid down a sacrifice bunt, which moved Larson to third. Kaelyn Rouleau then bunted, and reached on a defensive error while Larson scored.
In the nightcap, Lucy Biekkola got the start, and she went all seven innings, giving up nine hits, but holding the Knights off the scoreboard. She struck out 12 and walked three.
She helped herself out in the top of the first inning after Rouleau reached on a single. Brooke Koskela then singled, but Rouleau was tagged at second. Biekkola then singled to left field, and Koskela, who had stolen second and third, scored on the play.
The game remained 1-0 into the third inning. Rouleau sparked the Bulldogs’ offense with a one-out double to right field. Brooke Koskela singled to right field. Lucy Biekkola laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring Rouleau.
Brooks singled to short, which scored Koskela to make it 3-0 Hancock at that point.
In the fourth, Hancock was looking to strike again after Diem Kilpela singled and Larson walked. Two batters later, Freeman singled, but Kilpela was tagged out at third. Rouleau followed with a double to right field, and Larson scored on the play to give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.
