Copper Kings softball splits with Flivvers
KINGSFORD — The Calumet Copper Kings softball team traveled to Kingsford Tuesday, and earned a split with the Flivvers, dropping the opener 5-0 before winning the nightcap, 5-4.
In the opener, the Copper Kings got a lone single from Bethany Garrow in the sixth inning. Molly Erkkila drew a walk.
Lena Myhren went six innings in the pitcher’s circle, striking out six and walking two while giving up five hits and five runs.
In the nightcap, Calumet jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, and added two more runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 into the final two innings, holding the Flivvers to just one run.
Kaylee Newsom went all seven innings in the circle, striking out four and walking four. She gave up six hits and four runs.
Garrow led off by getting hit by the third pitch of the game. Erkkila then singled to move Garrow to third. Myhren flied out to right field, but Garrow scored on the play. Erkkila then scored on a wild pitch with Isabella Coppo at the plate.
The Flivvers got two runs back in the bottom of the second inning to even the score at 2-2.
In the top of the third, Garrow led off with a single to left field. Erkkila reached on a fielder’s choice and was then advanced to second on a sacrifice by Myhren. Coppo doubled to center, bringing Coppo home.
Kingsford responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to even things again at 3-3.
Elisa Laplander singled to open the top of the fifth and spark Calumet’s offense. Garrow sacrificed to move her to second. Two batters later, Myhren singled to left field two out to score Laplander. Then Coppo knocked Myhren home with a single to center.
