Bulldogs softball earns pair of wins over Patriots
ISHPEMING — Brooke Koskela collected six hits, including going 4-for-4 in the nightcap as the Hancock Bulldogs softball team earned a pair of wins on the road over the Westwood Patriots Monday. The Bulldogs won the opener, 8-3, and then cruised to a 12-4 win in the second game.
In the opener, the Bulldogs got three hits each from Vaeda Brooks and Mallory Sporalski and two hits each from Sofie Freeman, Koskela, Sadie Biekkola, and Diem Kilpela to earn the win.
Hancock broke a scoreless tie in the first game in the top of the fourth inning. Brooke Koskela reached on an error to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Lucy Biekkola flew out to center field, but Koskela scored on the play.
The Patriots got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning. Then they added another run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs needed a spark and they got it from Freeman, who led off with a bunt and reached safely. Two batters later, Brooke Koskela singled to center, scoring Freeman. They had a chance for more, with Sadie and Lucy Biekkola both on base, loading things up, but Romey Koskela and Kilpela could not bring any of them home.
In the bottom of the sixth, Hancock still trailed 3-2 when Brooks singled to center. Sporalski then singled to center as well. Freeman doubled to left field, scoring both runners and giving the Bulldogs their first lead at 4-3.
Two batters later, Brooke Koskela reached on a bunt, loading the bases. Sadie Biekkola then tripled to center, scoring Freeman and Koskela. Lucy Biekkola walked. Sadie Biekkola stole home. Romey Koskela bunted, scoring Lucy Biekkola on the play and putting the Bulldogs up by five.
Westwood threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but could not score.
Sadie Biekkola threw all seven innings to get the win. She struck out five, walked two and gave up seven hits.
In the nightcap, Brooke Koskela had four hits and drew a walk. Sadie Biekkola had three hits, while Lucy Biekkola and Brooks both had two hits each.
Freeman led off by reaching on an error. Two batters later, Brooke Koskela singled. Sadie Biekkola reached on an error, scoring Koskela. Lucy Biekkola followed with a triple to left field, scoring her older sister. Romey Koskela then doubled to left, scoring Lucy Biekkola and putting Hancock up 3-0.
Freeman reached on an error with one out in the second. She scored on the next at bat, as Kaelyn Rouleau grounded out, but Freeman crossed home plate safely.
Westwood got one run back in the bottom of the second.
Rouleau sparked the Bulldogs in the fourth with a two-out pop fly. She reached on an error. Brooke Koskela then walked. Sadie Biekkola singled to center, scoring Rouleau and putting Hancock up 5-1.
In the fifth, Romey Koskela led off by reaching on an error. Brooks singled to left. Two batters later, Sporalski reached on an error, scoring Brooks and Romey Koskela and putting the Bulldogs up 7-1 at that point.
The Patriots got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth.
In the sixth, Hancock was back at it. Brooke Koskela singled. Sadie Biekkola singled to center. Lucy Biekkola reached on a bunt, scoring Koskela. Three batters later, Emily L’Esperance was at the plate when Lucy Biekkola scored on a wild pitch.
In the top of the seventh, leading 9-3, the Bulldogs were hungry for more. Freeman singled to center with one out. Brooke Koskela singled to center. Sadie Biekkola tripled, bringing Koskela home. Biekkola then scored on a defensive error to make it 12-3.
Westwood got one run back in the bottom of the seventh, but two straight ground outs ended the game.
Lucy Biekkola got the win, going seven innings with eight strikeouts, two walks and six hits given up.
