Bulldogs softball sweeps Hematites

HANCOCK — Right fielder Emily L’Esperance hit her three career home run as the Hancock Bulldogs softball team rolled to a sweep of the Ishpeming Hematites, 13-1 and 15-0, Thursday at the Hancock Driving Park.
Lucy Biekkola threw a no-hitter in the nightcap.
L’Esperance helped drive the Bulldogs’ offense by going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Pitcher Sadie Biekkola also had a home run in the second game.
Sadie Biekkola also had a strong day at the plate in the opener, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. She also threw six innings, striking out six, walking three and giving up six hits.
Hancock got things started in the bottom of the first innings.
Left fielder Sofie Freeman drew a walk. Shortstop Kaelyn Rouleau doubled, scoring Freeman on the play. Three batters later, third baseman Lucy Biekkola reached on an error. Before the play came to an end, both she and Rouleau crossed home plate and the Bulldogs led 3-0.
The Hematites got one back in the second inning, but with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, Rouleau reached on an error and made her way around to score before the play came to an end. First baseman Alice Larson, who had walked two batters earlier, also scored on the play.
Hancock took a 7-1 lead into the fourth before Freeman led off with a walk. Rouleau then singled, putting runners on the corners. Two batters later, Sadie Biekkola tripled, clearing the bases. Two batters after that, second baseman Romey Koskela reached on an error, and Biekkola scored.
In the fifth, L’Esperance singled to center field to lead off. Larson then reached on an error. Freeman popped out to left field, but Larson scored on the play to make it 9-1.
The game remained there until the bottom of the sixth. Catcher Brooke Koskela led off with a well-placed bunt and she reached safely. Sadie Biekkola then singled to right field, scoring Koskela. Lucy Biekkola followed with a sacrifice bunt, but she reached on an error. Three batters later, L’Esperance launched one over the centerfield fence, scoring both Biekkolas and ending the game.
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs only needed three innings to earn the win.
Sadie Biekkola was perfect at the plate, where she went 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Freeman and Larson also both racked up three hits each.
Lucy Biekkola went three innings in the circle, striking out two, walking two, but giving up no hits. She also helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored.
Hancock got things started in the first inning in a two-out rally. Lucy Biekkola reached on an error. Sadie Biekkola hit one over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run.
Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the second, the Bulldogs went back to work. Larson singled to center field to lead off. Tatum Sporalski was hit by a pitch. Three batters later, Freeman doubled to center field, scoring Larson. Chloe Bastian was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Lucy Biekkola then doubled to center, scoring Sporalski and Freeman. Sadie Biekkola doubled to right field, scoring her younger sister in the process and putting Hancock up 8-0 at that point.
The Bulldogs’ offensive onslaught continued in the third inning.
Mallory Sporalski led off with a walk. Tia Pelto singled to left field, putting runners on the corners. Freeman laid down a bunt and reached first as Sporalski scored. Bastian then grounded out, but Pelto scored to make it 10-0 Hancock. Lucy Biekkola tripled to right field, scoring Freeman, and Sadie brought her younger sister home with a single to center.
Two batters later, Larson singled to left field, scoring Sadie Biekkola. Tatum Sporalski doubled to right field to bring Larson home. Mallory Sporalski followed with a double to left field to score her younger sister and end the game at that point.
