Copper Kings softball defeats Jets

SOUTH RANGE — The Calumet Copper Kings used multiple hits from Bethany Garrow, Chloe Coppo and Kaydence Christopherson as part of a 10-hit, 14-0 win over the Jeffers Jets Thursday in South Range.

In the top of the first inning, the Copper Kings got moving on the basepaths quickly. After Mollie Erkkila was hit by a pitch, she was replaced by Amiina Tarnowski. Tarnowski got to third after moving on a passed ball and then running on a ground ball by Lena Myhren. Myhren reached on an error, putting runners on the corners. Coppo then walked to load the bases.

Two batters later, Christopherson singled to left field, scoring Tarnowski. Myhren then scored on a passed ball with Jaysa Wilks at bat, putting the Copper Kings up 2-0.

Calumet got to work again in the second inning. Kaylee Newsom led off the second inning by getting hit by a pitch. Millie Loukus singled. Three batters later, Myhren hit a fly ball to left field and reached on an error, scoring Newsom and Loukus.

The Copper Kings held their 4-0 advantage into the fourth inning.

Garrow led off with a triple. Erkkila followed with a bunt single, putting runners on the corners. Myhren then singled to short, scoring Garrow. Coppo then singled to right field, which scored Erkkila and Myhren. Claire Ruonavaara walked. Two batters later, Wilks doubled to right field, scoring Ruonavaara. Coppo had scored while Wilks was at the plate.

Leading 9-0, Calumet kept the pressure on as Newsom bunted and reached on an error. Loukus then reached on an error, which allowed Wilks to score. Garrow then singled to center field, scoring Newsom. Erkkila then sacrificed to score Loukus and the Copper Kings led 12-0.

In the fifth, Coppo led off with a double to right field and she scored on the same play thanks to an error. Ruonavaara walked. Christopherson singled to left field. Wilks then sacrificed to score Ruonavaara. A pop out by Newsom and a strikeout by Elisa Laplander ended the inning.

Myhren got the win in the pitcher’s circle, going four innings, striking out six and giving up one hit. Newsom pitched one inning, striking out one.

For the Jets, Naomi Frahm had the only hit.

Ellie Kuntze pitched two innings, striking out one, walking two and giving up four hits. Janet Mattila went four innings, striking out two, walking two and giving up eight hits.
