Gremlins boys, Miners girls win regional meet at Houghton

HOUGHTON — The Houghton Gremlins boys and Negaunee Miners girls each won their respective sides of the MHSAA Region 42 track meet Thursday at Houghton.
The Gremlins boys who won their first regional title since 2021, who scored 53.25 points were paced by senior Luke Hill, who won the 800m with a time of 2:03.99, and the 1600m with a time of 4:38.08. He also won the 3200m with a time of 10:25.20.
The relay team of Daniel Xie, Brayden Goudge, Christopher Kocour, and Sam Roth won the 4x100m with a season-best time of 45.05.
The 4x800m relay team of Ben Hemmer, Birk Seagren, Colin VanKarsen, and Hill won with a time of 8:46.55.
The Calumet Copper Kings finished fourth with a team score of 24.25. They were paced by senior Brayden Krans, who won the 200m with a time of 23.47.
Senior Matthew Frantti won the discus throw with a toss of 143 feet, 9 inches. Frantti also won the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 3.5 inches.
On the girls’ side, the Gremlins finished second with a team score of 51. Sophomore Amy Sziber won the 100m adaptive with a time of 27.54. Sziber also won the 200m adaptive with a time of 48.69, and the 400m adaptive with a personal-record time of 1:39.63. She also won the shot put adaptive with a toss of 16 feet, 2 inches.
Senior Lily Ross won the 800m with a time of 2:29.67. Junior Tessa Rautiola won the 1600m with a time of 5:35.47 and the 3200m with a time of 12:48.67.
The 4x400m relay team of Ross, Holly Cooke, Chloe Serafin and Norah Woodruff won their race with a time of 4:33.33. The 4x800m team of Rautiola, Roman Trevino Peterlin, Cooke and Ross won with a time of 10:52.72.
The Copper Kings took third with a team score of 30.5. They were paced by senior Allison Bjorn’s win in the discus throw with a toss of 98 feet, 9 inches, and her win in the shot put with a throw of 32 feet, 2.5 inches.
The 4x200m relay team of Bailey Strom, Alice Lahti, Ava Rauvala, and Alexa Hoffman set a new season-best in winning their race with a time of 1:53.66.
