Gremlins softball downs Mountaineers twice

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Houghton Gremlins softball team scored 16 runs in their opening game of a doubleheader against Iron Mountain and followed that effort up with 19 in the nightcap as they earned a road sweep, 16-0 and 19-3.

In the opener, the Gremlins struck 12 times in the first inning and then added three in the second and one in the third.

Ellie Hainault, Romi Mattson, Kia Markham and Lexi Burns all registered three hits each. Hainault went 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Mattson went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Markham scored twice.

Kenzie Collard, Stella Soumis, Reagan Moyle and Sophie Hebert all had two hits each.

Emmy Pietila went 1-for-2 as every Gremlins hitter had at least one hit.

Soumis had five strikeouts, walked two and gave up three hits in three innings in the pitcher’s circle.

In the nightcap, Houghton scored 11 times in the first and then four in each of the second and third innings.

Collard led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored.

Thora Bier was the only other Gremlin with multiple hits, as she recorded two, going 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Mattson, Burns, Soumis, Markham, Hebert and Karly Matson all had one hit each.

Moyle threw three innings in the circle, striking out three, walking three and giving up just two hits.
