Houghton boys, Ontonagon girls golf teams win in Baraga

L’ANSE — On Wednesday, several area golf teams made the trek to L’Anse Golf Course for the Baraga Invite. When the final scores were recorded, the Houghton Gremlins boys and the Ontonagon Gladiators girls came away with the team wins.

Jeffers’ Benton Rajala was the boys’ medalist with a 38, one stroke better than Houghton’s duo of Connor Arko and Jack Sayen, who both shot 39. On the girls’ side, Calumet’s Marietta Kangas led the way with a score of 49. She was two strokes better than Ontonagon’s Olivia Lockhart (51) and three better than Hancock’s Kaelyn Rouleau (52).

Houghton’s boys not only had Sayen and Arko with 39, but Brendan Jukuri also shot 39. Carter Campioni finished with a 41 for a team total of 158.

The Hancock Bulldogs finished second. They were paced by Nolan Hanner and Marty Pietila, who both shot 41. Drew Sturos and Jackson Sintkowski both finished with 42.

For the Jets, who took third, after Benton Rajala, Tage Rajala finished with 41. Hudson Heinonen shot 46. Adler Rajala finished with a 49.

The Calumet Copper Kings finished fourth. They were paced by Calvin Anderson with a 42. Ted Loukus shot 43. Nels Loukus shot 46. Carter Salata finished with a 48.

The host Baraga Vikings finished fifth as a team, thanks to a 43 from Keegan Davidson. Mason Sprenkle (44), Kale Cichosz (45), and Daniel Conner (49) all finished under 50.

Jackson Vondoloski paced the sixth-place Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Blue Bolts with a 45. He was joined by Caleb Kentala (47), Landon Halkola (48), and Josh Gaunt (49).

The Gladiator boys took seventh. Brody Bobula paced the team with a 45. He was joined by Abi Pestka (47), Jerry Majurin (49) and Jack Nelson (50).

Lake Linden-Hubbell took ninth. Brady Axford led the way with a 43.

On the girls’ side, after Lockhart’s 51, the Gladiators had a 55 from Madyson Pantti, and a 60 from Summer Stites. The Gladiators finished with a team score of 245.

The Bulldogs finished second. After Rouleau’s 52, Diem Kilpela (63), Briell L’Esperance (64) and Chloe Bastian (67) all broke 70.

The Jets took third. They were paced by Alaina Kangas, who shot 58. Also scoring were Isabel Rajala (62), Lainey Asiala (66), and Celia Randell (68).

Marietta Kangas helped the Copper Kings finish fourth. She was joined by Linnea Pennala (68), Braylinn Antilla (69), and Majia Keranen (72).

Finishing fifth were the Gremlins, who were paced by Abi Dart, who shot 58. Haley Kriepke (74), Alyssa Northey (75), and Mia Lawson (78) also scored.

The Blue Bolts’ Emma Moilanen shot 68. Baraga’s Sophia Carr and Mea Lanczy both finished with 74.
