Lakes softball earns sweep of Copper Kings

CALUMET — Riding a big game from pitcher Emily Jokela in the opener, the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes softball team earned a sweep of the Calumet Wolverines Wednesday on the road. They won the opening game, 14-11, and the nightcap, 9-5.

In the opener, Jokela went 3-for-4 at the plate, with four RBI and three runs scored. In the pitcher’s circle, she went seven innings, striking out 16, walking three and giving up 14 hits to earn the win.

The Lakes got things started in the top of the first. Cleo Milkey reached on an error with one out. Jokela hit a sacrifice fly to bring Milkey home.

The game remained 1-0 in favor of the Lakes until the top of the third. Ella Schneiderhan got things going by leading off with a single to left field. Three batters later, Milkey singled to center, scoring Schneiderhan. Jokela then singled to center, scoring Milkey. Payton Goldsworthy tripled to right field, scoring Jokela, and the Lakes led 4-0 at that point.

Calumet answered in the bottom half of the inning. Molly Erkkila laid down a bunt and reached on the play. Two batters later, Chloe Coppo doubled to right field, scoring Erkkila.

Lake Linden got right to work and got that run back in the fourth. Kyara Mills led off with a single to right field. Hailey Crouch then reached on an error. Two batters later, Lissa Johnson singled to right, scoring Mills, and putting the Lakes back up four, 5-1.

The Copper Kings exploded in the bottom half of the inning for six runs. Kaydence Christopherson singled to left. Two batters later, Millie Loukus singled to center, scoring Christopherson. Loukus continued to third before the play came to an end. Two batters later, Lena Myhren walked. Loukus scored on a wild pitch. Erkkila reached on a bunt. Isabella Coppo singled to center, bringing both Erkkila and Myhren home. Calumet had evened the game at 5-5 at that point.

Chloe Coppo then tripled to right field, scoring Isabella. Clare Ruonavaara singled to center, bringing Coppo home, and giving the Copper Kings a 7-5 lead.

Jokela sparked the Lakes in the top of the fifth. She hit a one-out single to center. Goldsworthy walked. Alli Corrigan singled to center, scoring Jokela. Mills grounded out, but Goldsworthy tied the game at 7-7. Crouch then singled to left field, scoring Corrigan.

The Lakes added to their lead in the top of the sixth. Johnson led off with a walk. Ashlyn Steves reached on an error. Two batters later, Jokela singled to right field, scoring Johnson and Steves. Goldsworthy doubled to center, scoring Jokela. Corrigan walked, before Mills singled to center, scoring Goldsworthy to make it 12-7 Lake Linden at that point.

Crouch singled to right field as the inning continued, scoring Corrigan. Two batters later, Johnson singled to right field, scoring Mills on the play.

With two out in the bottom half of the sixth, Calumet rallied. Chloe Coppo walked. Ruonavaara reached on an error. Christopherson singled to left, scoring Coppo. Jaysa Wilks doubled to left, scoring Ruonavaara and Christopherson, and just like that, the Copper Kings trailed by four, 14-10.

Still down four in the seventh, the Copper Kings tried to rally again. Jailyn Poshak tripled to right field to lead off. She scored during the next at bat.

Myhren got the start for the Copper Kings, going five innings, striking out three, walking one and giving up nine hits. Kaylee Newsom pitched one inning, striking out one, walking two and giving up five hits. Poshak pitched one inning as well, striking out two and walking two.

In the nightcap, the Lakes scored twice early, added an insurance run in the third, and had a big inning in the sixth to put the game out of reach on their way to the win.

With one out in the top of the first, Milkey walked. Jokela tripled to right field, scoring Milkey in the process. Goldsworthy then doubled to center, scoring Jokela and the Lakes led 2-0.

In the top of the third, Jokela led off by reaching on an error. Goldsworthy then did the same thing, and Jokela scored on the play.

Leading 3-0 going into the top of the fifth, the Lakes quickly expanded that lead. Jokela led off with a walk. Goldsworthy followed with a two-run home run to center.

In the sixth, the Lakes continued attacking the ball. With one out, Paige Griffin singled to right field. Two batters later, Milkey singled to right field. Jokela walked to load the bases. Goldsworthy doubled to center field, clearing the bases. She scored on a wild pitch with Corrigan at the plate, and the Lakes led 9-0 at that point.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Copper Kings broke through. Clara Isaacson walked with one out. Isabella Coppo singled to left field, scoring Isaacson. Chloe Coppo then singled. Two batters later, Wilks singled to short, scoring Isabella Coppo. Ruonavaara then singled to left, scoring Chloe Coppo.

Calumet’s defense held in the top of the seventh, giving them a chance in the bottom half of the inning. Amiina Tarnowski doubled to center to lead off. Elisa Laplander singled to right, scoring Tarnowski. Isabella Coppo reached on a fielder’s choice. Chloe Coppo then singled to center, scoring Isabella, and pulling the Copper Kings within four. However, Loukus popped out to end the game.
