Lakes track teams win CMC titles

LAKE LINDEN — The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes track and field teams both won the Copper Mountain Conference Championship Monday on their home track. The boys finished with 136 points, 45 more than Ironwood. The girls scored 121 points, 35 more than Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
The girls were paced by senior Emily Jokela, who won the 100m (13.10), 100m hurdles (16.42), 300m hurdles (47.60) and the 400m (1:02.83).
Junior Cleo Milkey won the discus with a throw of 89 feet, 4 inches.
The Blue Bolts scored 86 points as a team. Junior Kiera Isaacson won the high jump with a jump of 5 feet. Sophomore Laila Bell won the long jump at 14 feet, 9 inches.
The 4x100m relay team of Nora Keranen, Sylvie Kentala, Emma Moilanen and Isaacson won their race with a time of 57.55.
The Ewen-Trout Creek Panthers finished fourth with 63 points. Freshman Bree Besonen had the lone individual win, taking the 800m in 2:42.09.
The 4x400m team of Emma Besonen, Alyssa DeCremer, Raylin Olson and Bree Besonen won their race with a time of 4:36.32. The 4x800m team of DeCremer, Emma Besonen, Leona Schutz, and Hannah Ferguson won their race with a time of 11:09.46.
The L’Anse Purple Hornets finished fifth with 50 points. They only had one win on the day, in the 4x200m relay, where the team of Kwynn Voskuhl, Sylvia Allen, Princess Pierre, and Breyelle Bowers won with a time of 1:58.61.
The Ontonagon Gladiators finished sixth with 42 points. Senior Alle Bobula had the team’s only win, in the 200m, where she set a new season best with a time of 27.85.
The Chassell Panthers finished seventh with 36 points. Senior Lily Etelamaki won the 3200m with a time of 13:12.64.
The Baraga Vikings finished eighth with 26 points. Sophomore Elisa Delene had the team’s only win in the pole vault with a height of 8 feet.
The Jeffers Jets finished ninth with 15 points. Their highest finisher was a second-place effort by sophomore Brielle Anderson in the long jump.
The Lakes boys had no individual winners on the day, but sophomore Lukas Axford finished second in the 300m hurdles, and sophomore Brady Axford finished second in the 400m. Senior Alex Drew finished second in the discus, and senior Nate St. Onge finished second in the pole vault.
The 4x100m team of St. Onge, Bradyn Bykkonen, Brad Davis, and Josh Daavettila won their race with a time of 49.95. The 4x400m team of Brady Axford, Danny Mikus, Kaden Gariepy and Lukas Axford won their race with a time of 3:45.82.
The Blue Bolts finished fourth with 58 points. Sophomore Baron Colbert had the lone win, taking the high jump with height of 5 feet, 8 inches.
The Chassell Panthers finished fifth with 30 points. Senior Kalvin Kytta won the 800m with a new season-best 2:04.49, the 1600m with a season-best 4:30.33, and the 3200m with a time of 9:59.37.
The Purple Hornets finished sixth with 29.5 points. Sophomore Connor Kemppainen was the lone winner, taking the 300m hurdles with a personal-record time of 43.23.
The Vikings finished eighth with 26.5 points. Sophomore Taven Lewis won the discus with a throw of 132 feet, 2 inches.
The Ewen-Trout Creek Panthers finished 10th with 11 points. Their best finish was by the 4x800m relay team of Everett Miles, Cooper Moilanen, Cameron Logghe, and Marcus Pirkola, who took third.
The Jets scored one point to finish 11th, thanks to a sixth-place finish by senior Nick Andrews in the discus.
All-Conference honors
Lake Linden’s Jokela won the MVP. The Lakes were Team of the Year. Their coach, Gary Guisfredi was named Coach of the Year.
The top sprinter was Bobula. The top hurdlers were Ontonagon’s Jenna Tarnowski and Dollar Bay’s Aubrey Karppinen. The top distance runner was Ironwood’s Aubrey Smith. The top jumper was Bell. The top thrower was Ironwood’s Emma Wardon.
For the boys, Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta won the MVP. The Lakes were Team of the Year. Their coach, Brett Gervais, was named Coach of the Year.
The top sprinter was Talon Hughes. The top hurdler was Kemppainen of L’Anse. The top distance runner was Ironwood’s Zach Smith. The top jumper was Wakefield-Marenisco’s Tanner LaMaide. The top thrower was Lewis.
