Lakes track teams win in Hancock Monday

HANCOCK — Both the Lake Linden-Hubbell boys and the girls track and field teams earned wins on Monday at the Bulldog Invite at Hancock High School. The Lakes boys collected 195 points to defeat the second-place Calumet Copper Kings, who finished with 126. The Lakes girls finished with 131 points, which was 28 points better than the Copper Kings, who collected 103.
The Lakes boys had three individual winners.
Sophomore Brady Axford won the 800m with a time of 2:23.57. Sophomore Josh Daavettila won the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 8 inches, which was a personal record. Senior Nate St. Onge won the pole vault with a height of 9 feet, 6 inches.
The boys relay team of Brady Axford, Ashton Sullivan, Danny Mikus, and Brad Davis won the 4x200m race with a time of 1:46.30
The 4x400m relay team of Brady Axford, Mikus, Kaden Gariepy and Lukas Axford won their race with a time of 3:50.15.
On the girls’ side, the Lakes were paced by senior Emily Jokela, who won the 100m with a season-best time of 12.93, the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.25, the 300m hurdles with a time of 50.00, and the 400m, where she set a new season-best with a time of 1:01.16.
Junior Cleo Milkey won the discus throw with a toss of 87 feet, 1 inch, which was a season-best for her.
The relay team of Ashlyn Steeves, Ella Schneiderhan, Payton Goldsworthy and Isabella Tampas won the 4x200m race with a season-best time of 1:57.51.
For the Copper Kings boys, seniors Brayden Krans and Matthew Frantti both had good days.
Krans won the 100m with a personal-record time of 11.61. He also won the 200m with a time of 24.53, and the long jump with a length of 17 feet, 9 inches.
Frantti won the discus throw with a personal-record 141 feet, 1 inch, and the shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 9.5 inches.
The Copper Kings relay team of Parker Krumm, Frantti, Izaak England, and Krans won the 4x100m with a season-best time of 47.84. The 4x800m team of Jacob Garrow, Krumm, Jack Ruonavaara, and Abe Juntilla won with a season-best time of 10:10.0.
On the girls’ side, sophomore Alexa Hoffman won the 200m with a season-best time of 28.76. Senior Allison Bjorn won the shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 4 inches.
The relay team of Bailey Strom, Jenna Yohe, Ava Rauvala, and Alexa Hoffman won the 4x100m race with a season-best time of 55.65.
The Dollar Bay Blue Bolts boys finished third and were paced by a win in the 400m by senior Joshua Gaunt with a time of 55.73. Gaunt also set a new personal record while finishing second in the 100m with a time of 12.18.
The Blue Bolts girls finished fourth. They were paced by junior Kiera Isaacson’s win in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 2 inches, which ranks 34th in the state.
The relay team of Eva Moilanen, Kendall Maki, Kalila DeNotto, and Isaacson won 4x400m with a time of 4:50.13.
The host Hancock Bulldogs girls finished third and the boys took sixth. The girls were paced by sophomore Ella Keranen, who won the 800m with a season-best time of 2:43.24, the 1600m with season-best time of 5:55.16, and the 3200m with a time of 13:24.21.
The relay team of Keranen, Alena Pietila, Emily Moore, and Rayna Towles won the 4x800m race with a season-best time of 11:17.0.
The Chassell Panthers boys finished fourth. They were paced by senior Kalvin Kytta, who won the 1600m with a season-best time of 4:40.09. He also won the 3200m with a time of 12:22.74.
The Panthers girls finished fifth. They had no individual winners, but freshman Jordan Holombo was impressive, finishing second in the 100m hurdles, and the 300m hurdles. Senior Lily Etelamaki finished second in the 1600m, setting a new personal-best time of 6:02.22.
The L’Anse Purple Hornets boys finished fifth, while the girls took sixth.
The boys were paced by sophomore Connor Kemppainen, who won the 110m hurdles with a personal record 16.89. He also won the 300m hurdles with a time of 43.74, good for another personal record.
The Baraga Vikings boys finished seventh while the girls took eighth. Sophomore Elisa Delene was the lone winner on the day with a pole vault height of 9 feet.
The Jeffers Jets girls finished seventh and the boys took eighth. The Jets’ lone winner was sophomore Brielle Anderson, who took the long jump with a length of 15 feet, 6 inches.
The Sacred Heart Cardinals girls finished ninth. Freshman Lily Froese set a personal record in the 1600m while finishing fifth. Eighth-grader Madilyn Froese finished fifth in the 200m ad the 400m.
