Local track and field teams compete at Baraga Invite

BARAGA — With temperatures among the warmest of the Spring, the Baraga Vikings hosted their Baraga Invite Monday afternoon. Calumet, Chassell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Hancock, L’Anse, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Jeffers and Sacred Heart all competed along with Watersmeet.

Lake Linden’s Emily Jokela, a senior, had a huge day, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.15, the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.24, the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.77, and the 400-meter dash with time of 1:02.36.

Her win in the 300-meter hurdles was the 39th best recorded time in the state this season.

In the boys’ races, sophomore Lukas Axford set a new personal record to win the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.60. Senior Danny Mikus set a personal record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:28.69. Senior Alex Drew won the discus with a throw of 126-feet, 7-inches. Sophomore Josh Daavettila won the high jump with a height of 5-feet, 8-inches. He also won the long jump with a jump of 17 feet.

Senior Nate St. Onge won the pole vault with a height of 9 feet.

The Lakes also won the boys 4-by-200, 4-by-400, and 4-by-800 relays, along with the girls 4-by-200.

The Vikings had one winner on the day, as pole vaulter Elisa Delene, a sophomore, cleared 7-feet, 6-inches.

They also had two second-place finishes in senior Nolan Hendrickson, who won the high jump at 5-feet, 6-inches, and senior Nate Stebenz in the discus with a throw of 117 feet.

The Copper Kings saw senior Brayden Krans win the 100-meter with a time of 12.06. Krans also won the 200-meter with a time of 23.72.

Junior Jordyn Wendling won the discus with a throw of 85-feet, 4-inches. Senior Allison Bjorn won the shot put with a throw of 29-feet, 9-inches.

Calumet won three relays as well. The boys 4-by-100 team finished first. The girls 4-by-100 and the 4-by-800 teams also won their races.

Chassell senior Kalvin Kytta won the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:40.38. Kytta also won the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:19.59. Senior Thomas Loukus won the shot put with a throw of 38-feet, 8-inches.

Senior Lily Etelamaki won the girls’ 3200-meter run with a time of 13:38.56. She finished second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:05.74.

Dollar Bay junior Kiera Isaacson won the high jump with a height of 4-feet, 6-inches.

The Blue Bolts also had a trio of seconds as senior Joshua Gaunt finished second in the 100-meter with a time of 12.53 and in the 400-meter with a time of 54.54. Junior Aubrey Karpinen took second in the 100-meter hurdles.

Hancock senior Ella Keranen won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:46.58 and the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:58.60.

Freshman Alena Pietila finished second to Keranen at the 800-meter with a time of 2:48.22.

The Bulldogs’ girls’ 4-by-800 relay team finished second, as well.

For L’Anse, sophomore Connor Kemppainen won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.10. He also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.88.

The only other win for the Purple Hornets was the girls’ 4-by-400 relay team.

The Jets had one winner on the day, sophomore Brielle Anderson won the long jump with a jump of 14-feet, 3.5-inches.

For Sacred Heart, eighth grader Madilyn Froese had a strong showing, finishing fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.86. She was the Cardinals’ highest finisher of the day.
