Softball roundup: Jets, Lakes earn sweeps, Copper Kings fall
Jets sweep Gladiators
SOUTH RANGE — The Jeffers Jets softball team earned a pair of wins Tuesday, knocking off the Ontonagon Gladiators, 13-7 and 19-6.
In the opener, Meg Ruohonen tripled as part of six-run third inning for the Jets. She also picked up a double, and reached safely five different times in the game.
Janet Mattila went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI as well.
In the nightcap, the Jets needed five innings to earn the win.
Eight different Jets had hits as they finished with a total of 14.
Naomi Frahm collected three hits, including a triple.
In the pitcher’s circle, Mattila struck out five.
Lakes sweep Purple Hornets
L’ANSE — The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes racked up a number of hits to earn a pair of wins over the L’Anse Purple Hornets Tuesday, 9-0 and 12-1.
In the openers, Emily Jokela was impressive in the pitcher’s circle, striking out 18, and allowing just one hit. She also helped her own cause at the plate, where she had an inside-the-park home run.
Payton Goldworthy picked up a pair of doubles. Cleo Milkey had a double and a single.
In the nightcap, Goldsworthy struck out 13 while allowing just two hits.
Alli Corrigan had three singles. Jokela had a pair of doubles. Ashlyn Steeves had two hits.
Copper Kings get swept by Miners
NEGAUNEE — The Calumet Copper Kings dropped a pair of games on the road to the Negaunee Miners, 11-1 and 11-4, Tuesday.
In the opener, Lena Myhren went 5 1/3 innings, striking out three, walking three and giving up 12 hits. At the plate, she went 1-for-1 and drew a pair of walks.
Claire Ruonavaara had two hits. Jaysa Wilks had a triple.
In the nightcap, Kaylee Newsom went three innings in the circle, walking four and giving up nine hits. Jailyn Poshak threw three innings in relief, striking out five, walking two and giving up just one hit.
Chloe Coppo had two hits. Myhren went 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Ruonavaara and Elisa Laplander also had a hit each.
