WestPAC announces All-Conference softball teams

CALUMET — The Houghton Gremlins claimed the major awards from the WestPAC conference as announced Thursday.

The Gremlins were WestPAC champions. Utility player Kenzie Collard, a senior, was named Player of the Year. Pitcher Stella Soumis, also a senior, was named Pitcher of the Year. Mel Baker was named Coach of the Year.

Collard was second on the Gremlins in hitting with a .520 average. She had an OPS of 1.373 and a slugging percentage of .816.

Soumis started 16 games, going 7-3. She had 82 strikeouts and finished with an ERA of 3.36.

Along with their teammates, juniors Romi Mattson and Lexi Burns were named to the First Team. Hancock seniors Sadie Biekkola and Brooke Koskela were named as well. Calumet senior Lena Myhren and junior Molly Erkkila rounded out the Copper Country players on the team.

Negaunee’s Kallen Schultz and Delaney Gladwell, Ishpeming’s Miley Phillips and Westwood’s Emersyn Nelson were also honored as First Team members.

Calumet senior Isabella Coppo and sophomore Bethany Garrow joined Hancock freshman Lucy Biekkola, Houghton sophomore Ellie Hainault and senior Reagan Moyle on the Second Team.

Also named to the Second Team were Ishpeming’s Janessa Eagle, Negaunee’s Cassie Feys and Miya Fredrickrson, and Westwood’s Nolia Dawson.

Calumet sophomore Chloe Coppo, Hancock senior Sofie Freeman, and Houghton junior Emmy Pietila earned honorable mention.

Also earning honorable mention were Gwinn’s Shawna Sundholm, Iron Mountain’s Julia Tapio, Ishpeming’s Marie Salisbury, Negaunee’s Theresa Anderson, and Westwood’s Morgan Schneider.
