LAKE LINDEN — A steady cool drizzle at the Boneyard on Wednesday had no effect on the hat bats being swung by the Finnish Coat softball squad. The ladies transformed a 4-3 lead over JB’s Sales and Services after five innings into a 13-3 victory in seven.

“Hitting was great tonight,” noted Finnish Coat player-coach Brynn Arko. “We also played great defense. That combination proved to be a winner.”

Lena Myhren got things started in the first with a lead-off triple and came home on a batter later. They added another three in the third. Myhren, Ryleigh Johnson and Arko all got hits and all scored. It was now a 4-0.

JB’s avoided the shutout with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Jillian Isaacson scored after getting on with a base hit. The ladies in black added two more in the fifth to get within one run at 4-3. Back-to-back walks to JB’s Sophie Heinonen and Maddie Mitchell led to them both scoring.

However, that is as close as they got as Finnish Coat (3-1) posted five in the sixth and four in the final frame for the 10-run win.

Josie Switzer earned the win in the circle for Finnish Coat. Lucy Biekkola suffered the loss.

Arko had no hesitation in the game ball should go to.

“Game ball goes to Vaeda Brooks in the outfield,” she said. “Nothing got by her, and she got a big hit for us.”

Gold Standard 6, Superior Service 5

Gold Standard defeated Superior Service 6-5 in the second game at the Boneyard. The game ended after just five innings due to the rain.

Gold Standard jumped out to a 4-3 lead after two, but Superior Service went ahead with two runs in the third for a brief lead at 5-4. Scoring the tying run was pitcher Josie Heinonen and the go-ahead run was scored by Raili Therrian.

Gold Standard’s winning pitcher Ashlyn Steves helped her own cause in the fourth with a double and a run to tie it at five. Then, in the fifth, Taylor Goldsworthy earned her way on with a double and came home with the winning run.

The JB’s squad went down swinging to end the game.

Northern Wishes 16, Old Bats of Michigan Made 5

Northern Wishes defeated the Old Bats of Michigan Made, 16-5, in Chassell on Wednesday.

Larissa Peterson was the winning pitcher with relief from Janet Mattila. Peterson struck out two and Mattila struck out three.

At the plate for Northern Wishes, Mattila, Peterson and Kim Aho each had three singles and Rosalie Kangas and Brita Hataaja each had a double.

For Old Bats, Sarah Dowd and Alana Nolan each had two singles and Aubrey Zackal had a double.
