LAKE LINDEN — Gold Standard’s Payton Goldsworthy took on a “Babe Ruthian” status Monday night in Copper Country Women’s Fastpitch softball action as she slugged not one, not two, but three home runs over the fence at the Boneyard. She helped her squad move to 3-0 on the season with a 7-6 win over Finnish Coat.
The right-handed pitcher opened the first with a two-run blast to put Gold Standard up 2-0. Her second time up in the third, she went solo to left center. In the fifth, she had a double, and then came the bottom of the seventh.
Thanks to Goldworthy’s bat, and her strong pitching, Gold Standard led 4-0 after three. However, Finnish Coat bounced back with a four-run fourth to tie things up. They added two more in the fifth and took a 6-4 lead into the final frame.
A walk put Gold Standard’s Jada Guilbault on first. The tying run was Ashlyn Steves. She got on with a single to right field, and up stepped Goldsworthy in the form of the winning run. She wasted no time in blasting a Lena Myhren riser to left center, sealing a 7-6 win.
It was the “Shot heard round the Boneyard,” according to Gold Standard coach Curtis Kinnunen.
“Game ball goes to Payton,” he said. “Three home runs and a double is pretty darn good. She hits well and works at it.”
He also noted that as a team, his girls hit the ball well.
“We made good contact and did not have a lot of strikeouts,” he added. “We also played good defense and came from behind to win this one.”
Old Bats of Michigan Made 6, Superior Service 3
In the opener at the Boneyard, Old Bats of Michigan Made posted a six-run sixth inning and came from behind to down Superior Service 6-3. It was their first win of the season.
“We had a slow start, but we finished well,” said Old Bats player-coach Danielle Thoune. “Most importantly, we had a lot of fun doing it.”
Superior Service got on the board first with a Millie Loukus home run to start the opening frame. She followed that with a single in the third. Gracie Moyle joined her on the basepaths with a base hit of her own and Kaydence Pizzi brought them both home with a double to left center. The ladies in red led 3-0 at that point.
With Josie Heinonen on the mound for Superior Services, that is how the game stayed until the sixth. The Old Bats seemed to catch up with Heinonen’s pitching and knocked in six tallies. Base hits by Romi Mattson, Alana Nolan and Aubrey Zackel all helped, as did misplays and errors by the Superior Service infield.
The Old Bats led 6-3 with just three outs to go. Superior Service went down one, two, three.
“Game ball goes to our pitcher, Romi Mattson. She threw a gem,” added Thoune.
Romi earned the complete-game win, striking out 12 along the way.
Northern Wishes 5, JB’s Sales and Service 3
In Chassell on Monday, Northern Wishes defeated JB’s Sales and Service, 5-3.
Rosalie Kangas was the winning pitcher with relief from Larissa Peterson. Kangas struck out 13, and Peterson had one strike out. Lucy Biekkola took the loss. She struck out four.
For Northern Wishes, Sylvia Aho had two singles, Peterson had a double and Morgan Erkkila had a home run.
For JB’s Sales and Service, Lexi Burns had a double.
