Gremlins baseball falls to Eskymos

ESCANABA — The Houghton Gremlins baseball team held the host Escanaba Eskymos to just four hits Friday afternoon in a semifinal matchup of the District 33 Tournament, but that was all the Eskymos needed to come away with a 1-0 win Friday.

Jackson Vondoloski pitched a gem for the Gremlins, striking out seven, walking four and giving up four hits.

At the plate, center fielder Joel Durocher had both hits the Gremlins managed, going 2-for-3 in the game. First baseman Eli Heathman drew the lone walk for the afternoon.

The game went into the bottom of the fifth as a scoreless tie before the Eskymos broke through. Bryce Bichler drew a one-out walk. Nolan Bink then followed with a single to center field, which was all Bichler needed to get around the bases and cross home plate.

Houghton had a chance to even things in the top of the sixth as Durocher picked up a one-out single. Heathman drew a walk and just like that, the Gremlins had the lead run on first. After catcher Brycyn Nettell struck out, Vondoloski was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with left fielder Hudson Markham coming to the plate. However, Markham flew out, ending the inning.

Starting at $3.50/week.
