Gremlins softball falls in district semifinal

PETOSKEY — The Houghton Gremlins got two hits from shortstop Kia Markham and one from center fielder Romi Mattson, but could not string anything together in a 10-0 loss in District 33 action against the Petoskey Northmen Thursday.

Petoskey took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

In the top of the second, Markham led off with an infield single, but three straight strikeouts shut down any chance of tying the score.

In the top of the third, left fielder Emmy Pietila drew a lead off walk. Two batters later, Mattson singled to left field, giving the Gremlins a chance to potentially take the lead. However, two straight pop outs ended the threat.

Petoskey added to their lead in the bottom of the third, going up 4-0.

Markham laid down a bunt and reached safely to lead off the top of the fourth, but two strikeouts sandwiched around a ground out ended the inning.

In the top of the fifth, Mattson drew a two-out walk, but a ground out ended the inning again.

The Northmen took their four-run lead into the sixth, and quickly loaded the bases with three straight singles. Two errors sandwiched around a double put Petoskey up 8-0. Another single ended the game as two more runs scored, ending the Gremlins’ season.

Starting at $3.50/week.
