Team Michigan rallies to defeat Team Superior in first UP All-Star baseball game
NORWAY — In the Cold Weather Coaches Association U.P. All-Star baseball game held Monday, Team Michigan trailed by as many as five before they came back to defeat Team Superior, 7-6, at Mike Maule Field in Norway during the first annual game.
Team Superior got on the board in the first inning after Negaunee’s Carsen Belanger singled, scoring one run.
A walk by Ironwood’s Robert Roberts, and a single by Manistique’s Cooper Curtis helped Team Superior extend their early lead in the second.
Rudyard’s Tanner Baker hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the fourth for Team Superior. Jeffers’ Cody Turner grounded out, which helped Team Michigan take the lead 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth.
Team Superior took the lead in the top of the seventh. Baker doubled, scoring one run, to tie the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, Norway’s Cole Baij hit a walk-off sacrifice fly, scoring courtesy runner Aiden Sevon, of Menominee, from third base, giving Team Michigan the 7-6 victory.
Kingsford’s Andres Finley led things off on the bump for Team Michigan. The pitcher allowed two hits and one run over one inning, striking out none and walking none.
Newberry’s Matthew Rahilly opened the game for Team Superior. The hurler gave up zero hits and zero runs over one inning, striking out three and walking none.
Baij, Norway’s Bryce Adams, Pickford’s Owen McConkey, Bark River-Harris’ Lucas Hall, Turner, and Newberry’s Ethan Pavey each threw innings for Team Michigan in relief.
Turner threw one inning, gave up two hits, including a home run, and struck out one.
Gladstone’s Austin Pepin, Negaunee’s Jack Siik, Kingsford’s Gavin Trevillion, Belanger, Kingsford’s Garrett Brown, and Curtis pitched in relief for Team Superior.
Norway’s Bryce Adams and Finley each collected two hits for Team Michigan. Baij, Adams, Finley, and Bark River-Harris’ Dom Lantagne each drove in one run. Baij paced the team with two walks. Overall, Norway’s Landon Amundson had the most chances in the field with 10.
Turner led off for Team Michigan, going 0-for-3 at the plate with a strikeout.
Team Superior amassed 10 hits in the game. Baker and Rahilly were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits. Curtis and Baker each drove in two runs.
Baker and Finley were selected as Team MVP’s for their respective teams.
