LAKE LINDEN — The ladies from Gold Standard lived up to their name once again with a 6-2 win over JB’s Sales and Service at the Boneyard on Monday. With the win, Gold Standard sits atop the Women’s Copper Country Fastpitch Softball league at 5-0.
Gold Standard jumped out to a 2-0 lead with catcher Taylor Goldsworthy and pitcher Emily Jokela both scoring. Taylor got on with a triple and Jokela slugged an inside-the-park home run.
JB’s tied it at two with a run in second and another in the third. This one stayed knotted at two until the fifth. In that frame, Gold Standard’s bats came alive to the the tune of four runs — all with two quick outs.
Outfielder Ashlyn Steves started the hit parade with a single. That was followed by base hits by sisters Taylor and Payton Goldsworthy. Jokela capped it off with a fourth single to the left side. All scored to make it a 6-2 game and clinch a win.
“Jokela pitched a gem with 15 strikeouts,” stated coach Curtis Kinnunen. “Our bats certainly helped. Good things happen when we put the ball in play.”
Finnish Coat 16, Old Bats of Michigan Made 3
In the nightcap at the Boneyard, the bats of Finnish Coat were hard to slow down. The ladies in black scored at least one run in all but two innings for a 16-3 win over Old Bats of Michigan Made.
After both teams scored in the first, it stayed tied until the fourth frame. Then came some early fireworks, courtesy of Finnish Coat. Outfielder Ryleigh Johnson belted the a triple to start the inning off. Vaeda Brooks then struck out and up stepped Ryleigh’s older sister Ashlee. The older Johnson hit one deep to center and over the fence for her first career home run.
The aerial attack didn’t stop there.
After Emma Kargela struck out, shortstop Clea Ollenketo launched a home run bomb to right center for run number three of the inning and number four in the game. Pitcher Ellie Hainault was the inning’s final run. She was also the winning pitcher after seven.
“The two home runs were great today,” said Finnish Coat’s player-coach Brynn Arko. “That was Ashlee’s first homer and who knows how many Clea has.”
While the Old Bats scored one more run in their half of the fourth and another in the fifth, Finnish Coat went on the rally, scoring 11 more runs before the game ended in a 13-run win.
“Fielding was good,” added Arko. “There were no errors. It was a good, clean game for us, and that wins games.”
