Copper Kings football earns wins over Wykons, Patriots
The Calumet Copper Kings opened their season with wins over West Iron County, Westwood and Negaunee to improve to 3-0.
Against the Wykons in their season-opener on Thursday, Aug. 28, Tyler Halonen ran for two first-half scores before Trent Anderson picked up a pair in the third quarter.
Halonen’s first was a 30-yard scamper in the first quarter, which was followed by a Ben Anderson kick, giving Calumet a 7-0 lead. His second came in the second quarter on a 7-yard run. Anderson again picked up the extra point to give the Copper Kings a 14-0 lead at half.
In the third quarter, Trent Anderson capped off a pair of drives with a 3-yard touchdown run and a 1-yard touchdown run. Ben Anderson again was successful on the kicks, putting Calumet up 28-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Jax Carlson scored from 23 yards out with Ben Anderson again hitting the extra point to put the Copper Kings up 35-0. Then Sawyer Berg scored on a 1-yard run to cap the scoring.
Halonen was just 1-of-2 through the air, but he ran the ball nine times for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Oskar Loukus made the catch.
Trent Anderson ran nine times for 56 yards and two touchdowns. Ben Anderson also ran nine times for 140 yards.
In the game against the Patriots on Friday, Sept. 5, the Copper Kings trailed Westwood 6-0 after one quarter, but then struck four times in the second and twice more in both the third and fourth to earn a 55-6 win.
Loukus sparked the Copper Kings early in the second with a 30-yard punt return for a touchdown. Ben Anderson made the kick after. Then Anderson scored from 7 yards out, 29 yards out, and 21 yards out. He also made all extra points to put Calumet up 28-6 at the break.
Ben Anderson then struck again on a 50-yard run in the third quarter before making the extra point.
Halonen then scampered in from 16 yards out before the end of the quarter, and Anderson made that kick as well, putting Calumet up 42-6 at that point.
Keith Koivisto scored from 13 yards out in the fourth quarter before Ben Anderson made the extra point, putting the Copper Kings up 49-6.
Loukus capped the scoring with a 35-yard run. Ben Anderson missed the kick.
Ben Anderson finished with 15 rushes for 199 yards and four touchdowns. Koivisto had five rushes for 34 yards and a touchdown.
