Copper Kings football stifles Miners
NEGAUNEE — The Calumet Copper Kings football remained undefeated Friday after shutting down the Negaunee Miners, 33-18, on the road.
Tyler Halonen drove the Copper Kings offense effectively, going 2-of-2 through the air for 72 yards and one touchdown. He also ran the ball 16 times for 110 yards and one 40-yard touchdown.
Ben Anderson was also effective, running nine times for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
Anderson got Calumet on the board first with a 20-yard run in the first quarter for a touchdown.
Oskar Loukus came up with an interception for a touchdown in the second quarter, but a failed two-point conversion left the Copper Kings up 13-0 at that point.
Evan Dellangelo ran a 65-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to get the Miners on the board.
Trailing 13-6 in the third quarter, the Miners struck again on a Vince Tincknell 3-yard run, but the two-point conversion failed, and Calumet led 13-12 at that point.
Anderson gave the Copper Kings breathing room with a 54-yard touchdown reception from Halonen to put Calumet up 20-12 going into the final frame.
In the fourth, Tincknell again cut into Calumet’s lead with another 3-yard touchdown run, but again, the two-point conversion failed.
Halonen broke off a 40-yard run for a touchdown to put Calumet back up by multiple scores, 27-18. Anderson followed that up with a 14-yard run for a touchdown to put the game out of reach.
Calumet finished with 330 yards of total offense, including 258 on the ground.
