L’ANSE — The Jeffers Jets volleyball team notched their third win a row on Thursday with a 3-0 sweep of the L’Anse Purple Hornets, 25-14, 25-19 and 25-20.

“I am very happy with the way the girls played tonight,” said Jets coach Rachel Sondergrath. “I liked our defense. We really covered the floor well.”

She added that good service was key and that started in the first set. With Lainey Aisala at the line, the Jets (4-4) jumped out to a 7-4 lead. Just minutes later, teammate Montanna Heinonen posted a service run of six to put the Jets up 21-14. They scored the last four points to close the set.

The second set was L’Anse’s best as Kwynn Voskuhl pushed her team out to a 5-0 lead at the service line. However, the Jets quickly regrouped and bounced back thanks to Kylee Andrews. She posted a service run of eight, and the Jets were flying high with a 10-6 lead.

Mia Nordstrom posted back-to-back aces at 12 and 13, and the Jets did not slow down. Nordstrom led the team with five kills as well.

While the Purple Hornet’s Lindsey Biekkola was able to post a service run of five, and inch her team back into the set, that was as good as it got.

Heinonen opened the third set for the Jets with a service run of five. That morphed into a 15-12 lead. However, the Purple Hornets (4-11) were not going down easy. They got within one at 15-14, and again at 17-16, but with Andrews on the line, the Jets took off and landed the set and match win.

Despite the loss, L’Anse coach McKenna Monticello was pleased with the way her girls played.

“We are getting better,” she said. “We had good energy tonight and good communication. We were competitive, and I am proud of my girls to staying in this one.”
