LAKE LINDEN — The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes football team posted another big score on the gridiron Saturday and earned their second win of the season. They defeated the Rapid River Rockets, 62-14, at Ron Warner Field.
“I liked the complete game that we played,” said Lakes coach Brett Gervais. “We were down, but we bounced back.”
The Lakes opened the scoring on their first drive. It was a 50-yard trek down the field that ended in a pass play from Brady Axford to one of his triplet brothers, Tyler. Brady earned two more and the Lakes led 8-0 after one.
The Rockets scored first in the second with Hayden Kee scoring on a run up the side at the 11:56 mark. Their two-point attempt was no go. However, they took the lead just three minutes later with a pass play. Lane Olsen hit Jared Huskey open in the end zone for six. This time they did score two and now led 14-8.
It was short-lived though, as the Lakes countered with three touchdowns before the half was over. First, it was Brady Axford who again hit his brother Tyler for six. Add two, and the Lakes were back in the lead at 16-14.
Next up was a brilliant run by the Lakes’ Josh Daavettila at around the 5:36 mark. The captain found daylight and the end zone with a 43-yard score. He led the rushing with an impressive 228 yards. Brady Axford followed with 145 yards. The Lakes scored once more to finish the second with a 32-14 lead.
“It took us a quarter to adjust,” Gervais added. “They (Rapid River) did a nice game in their passing game. We had to adjust, and we did.”
The Lakes’ adjustment meant keeping the Rockets off the scoreboard in the second half and adding an additional 32 points for themselves.
This included another big 70-yard run by Daavettila to start the third, which resulted in eight for the Lakes. Then Brady Axford earned his third touchdown of the afternoon with a 17-yard run. The Lakes now lead 48-14 after three.
With the big lead, Gervais put his second-string players in for the final 12 minutes.
Sophomore Blake Lebo stole the show for the Lakes with two touchdowns runs – totaling 17 yards – to close out the game.
“I like that we got the subs in and left this game healthy,” stated Gervais. “It is great to have some depth. Being healthy allows us to prepare for the next game with a complete roster.”
