HOUGHTON — Michigan Tech Huskies senior goalkeeper Bri Barrows has been named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.

The Oxford, Michigan, native helped Michigan Tech to a 1-0 win over rival Northern Michigan on Sunday for the Huskies first win in Marquette since Sept. 30, 2018. Barrows made five saves facing a season-high 23 shots.

“It’s exciting,” said Huskies coach Melissa Kuhar. “But even she’d be the first one to tell you it’s a team award. Without (Olivia) Gette in the back, Amelia (Gregory), Gabby (Gabrielle Klein), ‘AK’ (Anna Syracuse), any of our defenders, our whole team, she doesn’t get a shutout, right? The girls back there helping her have been tremendous in front of her.

“In our group chat yesterday, I think she was like pro-Gette to get the award. I’m like, ‘You got it already. Gette can’t have it now. You’ve already won it.’ So, that just shows the type of people they are. It’s a team award, and Bri would be the first one to tell you that. But, yeah, exciting to have recognition.”

The shutout was the first of the season for Barrows, the sixth of her career and the first shutout of the Wildcats since Oct. 3, 2021.

Barrows and the Huskies shift to the second half of league play next week, starting a four-game road stand at Davenport on Friday and Saginaw Valley State on Sunday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
