Huskies volleyball drops all three matches at Crossover
HAMMOND, Ind. — The Michigan Tech Huskies volleyball team wrapped up play at the 17th annual Midwest Region Crossover with a 3-0 loss to Walsh on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers won 25-22, 25-18, and 27-25.
The match ended a tough weekend for the Huskies, where they won just two sets in three matches.
“We battled another talented team today and were unable to gain an advantage in the match,” Huskies coach Cindy Pindral said. “We have a lot of work to do before we face very tough conference opponents next weekend.”
Four different Huskies had at least two kills in the opening set, but the Cavaliers held a slight lead throughout. Tech survived three setpoints before Walsh got a kill from Sammie DiBease.
Walsh (14-5) never trailed in the middle frame and used an 8-2 to gain control, leading by as many as eight. Junior outsider hitter Jacqueline Yancy had five kills in the second for the Huskies.
Michigan Tech led for most of the third and were leading 20-15 before the Cavaliers mounted a comeback to tie it at 22. The Huskies battled through three match points, before Walsh closed the match with a kill by Izzy Shank and an ace by Brynn Egbert.
Yancy led Tech with 13 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Paige Wagner hit .556, tallying 11 kills and five blocks. Senior setter Avery Brown set the offense with 27 assists and added 12 digs. Senior libero Julia Fledderjohn led the defense with 14 digs.
Kamoron Stover tallied a match-high 15 kills for the Cavaliers, while Aj Burick had 31 assists, and Locie Levengood registered 19 digs.
Volleyball falls in a pair at Crossover on Friday
The Huskies dropped a pair of matches on Friday to begin the 17th annual Midwest Region Crossover. The Huskies fell 3-0 to Indianapolis in the early match and went five sets against Ohio Dominican in the late match.
“We played two quality opponents today and fought really hard in the late match,” Pindral said. “We continue to rotate in a lot of players, and I’m excited for another chance to compete on Saturday.”
Indianapolis 3, Michigan Tech 0
Tech was playing as the GLIAC No. 5 seed and opened against the GLVC’s No. 4 seed, Indianapolis. The Greyhounds won their seventh straight match after defeating the Huskies 25-14, 25-13, and 25-18.
Junior right side hitter Rachel Zurek led Tech with nine kills. Junior middle blocker Tricia Kennedy added five kills, while Wagner and freshman right side hitter Madelyn Torola combined for eight.
Junior setter Tess Hayes set the offense with 15 assists, and Fledderjohn led with 13 digs.
Ohio Dominican 3, Michigan Tech 2
ODU was the No. 2 seed out of the GMAC, and extended its winning streak to eight straight after the five-setter, 25-20, 23-25, 26-24, 23-25, and 15-7.
The match took just over two hours and had 32 ties and 14 lead changes.
Michigan Tech had three different players with double-digit kills. Zurek led with 13 kills, while Torola and Yancy added 10 each.
Brown tallied a Michigan Tech-best 24 assists, and freshman setter Madelynn Kreider added 16 assists.
Fledderjohn finished with 23 digs, hitting the 20-dig mark for the fourth time this season.

Tech is 7-11 overall and wrapped up non-conference play Saturday. The Huskies get back to GLIAC action next weekend against Wayne State on Friday and Grand Valley State on Saturday at the SDC Gym.
