Huskies volleyball falls to Pride in Indiana Sunday

HAMMOND, Ind. — The Michigan Tech Huskies volleyball team fell 3-1 at Purdue Northwest on Sunday in the only meeting with the Pride this season. Purdue Northwest won 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, and 25-22.

The match had 27 ties and 16 lead changes. The Pride overcame 11 lead changes in the first set and scored the final nine points to take the lead. The Huskies had more kills in the opening frame but also had more errors.

Purdue Northwest (7-7, 4-4 GLIAC) never trailed in the second, though the Huskies kept it within a four-point margin. Freshman right side hitter Madelyn Torola had eight kills in the second, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Pride’s .341 hitting percentage.

Michigan Tech got on the board in the third after 13 ties and 11 lead changes. The Huskies had a 4-0 run in crunch time, which included back-to-back kills by junior outside hitter Jacqueline Yancy for setpoint. A serving error made it a 2-1 match. Yancy totaled five kills in the set.

The Pride finished off the match in the fourth. Yancy was a force again with seven kills for the Black and Gold, but too many errors by the Huskies and a balanced Purdue Northwest offense gave the home team the victory.

Torola led the Huskies with 18 kills for the second match in a row. She hit .417 with a pair of solo blocks. Yancy finished with 14 kills and nine digs over the final three sets. Junior outside hitter Brooke Dzwik had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Junior middle blocker Tricia Kennedy and sophomore middle blocker Paige Wagner added seven kills each. Freshman setter Madelynn Kreider tallied 29 assists and Tess Hayes added 23 assists, and senior libero Julia Fledderjohn had 15 digs.
